Trojans top Hurricanes

The Parkland High School boys soccer team continued its streak of shutout victories last week with a pair of Eastern Pennsylvania Conference wins. The Trojans then began this week on a high note with a 3-0 road win over Liberty in an early-season marquee matchup of unbeatens in the EPC.

The Trojans are one of just two undefeated teams left in league play, joining Emmaus.

“We try to get better every day, and we talk about ‘Parkland playing Parkland’ and being the best version of ourselves possible,” said Trojan head coach Scott Mang. “We try not to compete against anyone else. I think this growth mindset helps us to remain focused and not look too far ahead into the schedule.

“We continue to be a very balanced team when it comes to assists and goal scoring opportunities and our overall defense has been outstanding so far. This is an awesome group of players, parents and supporters and we are having a blast training and playing with one another. This is my main goal as a high school coach.”

The Trojans scored a season-high in goals and took down East Stroudsburg North 10-0 last Wednesday on the road. They followed that two days later with a 4-0 victory against Nazareth at home Friday.

In the win over the Timber Wolves, there were eight different goal scorers, led by a hat trick from Alex Hurwitz. Lincoln Fritz, Matt Vindel, Kerem Adali, Austen Alvarez-Yong, Ryan Bender, James Whitehead and Jose Canela all found the back of the net.

In the victory against the Blue Eagles, Fritz led the offense with two goals, while Taj Pollard and Anthony Bautista both recorded a goal. Hurwitz contributed two assists and Pollard added one. Andrew Staples finished with two saves in net.

Against the Hurricanes, the Trojans lineup showed its flexibility with different players in different positions across the field.

Hurwitz tallied two goals and Fritz added the third. Staples finished with two saves.

“We have 27 players roistered on varsity and most players can play in several positions,” said Mang. “So when something isn’t working, we can joystick players into a variety of formations and positions and it has been working out so far. It gives the boys valuable experience in a variety of situations. The boys on the team know their role and are willing to do anything to make the team better. We demonstrate this game in and out.

“Our overall team fitness is something that shows each and every match and the Liberty match was no different. We worked very hard from the start of the game to the final whistle. We were able to put our foot on the gas at 65 minutes into the game rather than hope we can last and that might have been the difference against Liberty.”

Parkland is now 8-0 overall and 8-0 in the conference.
