Salisbury picks up first two wins

Salisbury is looking to find some consistency in its play this season

In the last week the Falcons have picked up a pair of nice wins that have them thinking a spot in districts is not out of the question. If the Falcons find a way to cut down on mistakes and can find some consistent offense, the postseason is not out of the question.

First up was a game at Lehighton (1-10 overall, 1-8 Colonial) that had gotten underway back on Sep. 4 but was suspended because of torrential rain. The Falcons got a first-half goal from Soren Ruiz and Jaxson Case gave his team some breathing room in the second half with his first goal of the season.

The win was an example of what this team can do when it plays mistake-free soccer and focus on the basics.

“This was a great effort by the team, and it was our first shutout this season,” said second year coach Barry Frick. “The boys played hard and earned the win.”

The defense played its best game of the season and prevented the Indians from getting too many good looks at the net. Goalie Julian Makhoul was called on for just three saves in the game and made all three to get the shutout win.

Notre Dame of Green Pond turned the tables on the Falcons and shut them out in the next game, downing Salisbury 3-0 on the Falcons’ home turf.

Salisbury regrouped before heading to Bangor last Saturday and had a good return trip after pulling out a hard-fought 1-0 win in double overtime against the Slaters.

The Falcons (2-5 Colonial, 3-7 overall) have an interesting mix of games this week.

First up are road games at Palmerton (3-9-0, 2-7-0) and Pen Argyl (4-6-1, 1-6-1) before they host the defending state champion Northwestern Lehigh Tigers (10-1-0, 10-0-0) on Saturday.
