OT goal keeps EHS girls soccer unbeaten
The Emmaus High School girls soccer team was taken to the brink of its first conference loss over the weekend, but the Hornets found the golden goal in the second overtime period to remain unbeaten.
Last Tuesday, Emmaus defeated Bethlehem Catholic 5-0 and followed that with another 5-0 victory over Freedom on Thursday. Saturday morning, Emmaus faced its toughest test to date and passed it with a 2-1 win in double overtime against Easton.
“It’s been a good start to the season so far,” said hornet head coach Chris Hain. “The girls worked hard all preseason at training to be able to position themselves to have a strong year, and they’re doing that so far.”
In the win over the Golden Hawks, Emmaus received 80 percent of its scoring from Lizzy Bender. She finished with four of the five goals and had an assist on the other goal.
Giuliana Meyer recorded the fifth goal for EHS. Ella Scharper tallied three assists and Hannah Berk added one. Sadie Wallace finished with one save in net. Emmaus had 19 shots and gave up just one.
In the victory against the Patriots, there was a more evenly distributed scoring output as five different players found the back of the net. Bender, Berk, Meyer, Scharper and Erynn Stephens did the scoring for the Hornets.
Bender recorded three assists and Meyer added one. Wallace made four saves and Olivia Haberl had one.
“The defensive back line played very well as always in this one,” Hain said. “Emma Paradise, Ella Daly, Bailey Johnson, Stella Pietrulewicz, Phoebe O’Hara, Cecelia Lower and Kyana Deabru all contributed. Midfield play from Ella Scharper, Sofia Isaksson, Sophia Shutkufski, Blair Stephens and Brynn Campbell was very dynamic, which helped connect our back line to our forwards, creating most of our chances. Forward play by all our forwards, most of the scoring reports all had great games.”
Meyer finished off a cross from Bender in front of the net with just two minutes to go in the second overtime to win the game against the Red Rovers.
Bender had the opening tally off an assist by Stephens. Wallace finished with five saves in goal for the win. Easton’s goal by Julia Cohen came 15 minutes into the second half.
Emmaus has another busy, three-game week in conference play with East Stroudsburg South Monday, Stroudsburg Wednesday night at Memorial Field and Pleasant Valley Friday afternoon.
