Nestor, Griffith lead team at Lion Invitational

The Northwestern Lehigh cross country teams opened the season at the Moravian Academy Invitational on Aug. 22 Bethlehem Township.

The Tiger boys team finished second among Class 2A teams at the meet, while the Northwestern girls team finished sixth in the Class 2A standings.

Rosie Nestor was the team’s top finisher in the varsity races, taking 12th place overall in the girls race among all finishers. She was the second Class 2A runner to cross the finish line in the girls varsity race. Tiger teammates Katie Furman (77th), Ava Smedstad (98th), Laura Earles (104th) and Charlotte David (106th) rounded out the team’s top five finishers. Emily Fornwalt (112th) and Amber Carl (113th) also competed for the Tiger varsity team at Moravian.

Noah Griffith (42nd place) led Northwestern’s boys team, followed by teammates Brady Furman (48th), Fornauf (53rd), Kieran Baker (54th) and Quentin Gutierrez (86th). The Tigers’ Isaac Grub (88th) and Luke Breidinger (125th) also competed in the varsity race at Moravian.

Northwestern opened the Colonial League season last Tuesday with a meet at Saucon Valley. Both Tiger teams went 2-1 at the meet, beating Catasauqua and Salisbury but falling to Southern Lehigh.

Griffith led the Tiger boys team with an 8th-place individual finish, followed by teammates Grub (19th), Fornauf (22nd), Baker (27th) and Gutierrez (28th).

In the girls race, Nestor finished second overall. Katie Furman (18th), Smedstad (29th), Earles (31st) and Emily Fornwalt (32nd) made up the rest of Northwestern’s top five.
