Falcons hold off Wilson

All teams lose games.

The good ones learn not to let one loss turn into a losing streak.

Salisbury was able to do just that last week, bouncing back from its first loss of the season by holding off Wilson Saturday for a 16-8 win.

The win helps the Falcons put a 63-0 week 2 loss to Notre Dame (Green Pond) behind them.

“Last week we were upset at the results,” said Falcon quarterback Keaton Frye. “We just had to move on. Not forget that it happened, but move on from it.”

Frye led the Salisbury offense with 127 rushing yards on 10 carries. He also threw for 138 yards and a pair of touchdowns on 6-for-11 passing, while also throwing two interceptions.

The junior was making just his third varsity start under center and seems to be getting better each week.

“He’s a threat to run,” said Falcon head coach Kevin DiZenzo. “He’s a threat to pass. More importantly he sees when to do what.”

Despite interceptions on Salisbury’s first two possessions, Frye led his team on a second quarter scoring drive that spanned six plays and 34 yards.

He also caught a pass on a gimmick play that saw receiver Jadiel Gonzalez take a pitch then throw across the field to Frye for 12 yards.

On the next play, a fourth-and-goal from the 12-yard line, Frye hit AJ Moren for the junior’s first career touchdown.

This is Moren’s first season on offense and just his second season of football since he played flags. He had eight interceptions last season as a sophomore defensive back, but none of them finished in the end zone.

“It feels good to score,” said Moren. “Last year I never had a pick six.”

Moren nearly had a pick six against Wilson, but after intercepting a third-quarter pass, he had open field ahead before colliding with a teammate near midfield. Moren’s touchdown, and a two-point conversion pass from Frye to Jamanni Cruz, made the score 8-0 with 5:18 left in the first half.

Wilson answered with a 10-play touchdown drive capped by J’Son Johnson’s 14-yard run to pay dirt. Ryan Bonham ran in the two-point conversion to tie the game with 57 seconds left in the first half.

The Warriors took the second half kick off to the Salisbury 23-yard line, but the Falcon defense forced a three-and-out on that possession.

Salisbury’s second touchdown drive started at its own 49-yard line and used just two plays.

Frye hit Cruz for a 41-yard gain on the first play. Moren caught a 10-yard touchdown pass on the next play. Jaden Claudio caught the two-point conversion pass from Frye for a 16-8 lead with 7:14 left in the game.

Moren, who also plays baseball, is enjoying his second year of football and he’s seamlessly made the transition from being primarily a defensive back to being a two-way player.

“Every day after school I look forward to practice,” he said. “Fridays I look forward to games. I can’t get enough of it.”

The Falcon defense held Wilson scoreless in the second half.

The Warriors had the ball five times after intermission. Four of those drives ended with Salisbury stopping fourth down plays. The other possession ended with Moren’s interception.

Salisbury was also aided by Wilson’s problems snapping the ball. The Warriors had five snaps get away from their quarterbacks or punter for a total loss of 71 yards in the game.

The Falcons certainly missed linebackers Jordan Tocci and Jacob Watson, who were both out with injury. But several players stepped into bigger roles against Wilson.

Freshman Joshia Cubera had eight tackles from a middle linebacker spot, including one for loss. Senior Christian Olesak had four tackles and one for loss. He brought down Wilson quarterback Jaxson Tadayesky for a two-yard loss on the Warriors final offensive play of the game to all but seal the win.

“Christian Olesak kept us in the game with his energy and his emotion,” Moren said.

Jeremiah Bell led the Falcons with 11 tackles in the game. Elijah Garriga had nine tackles and team highs in solo tackles (6) and tackles for loss (2).

Dominic Natosi, Issac Gross and Willmel Peralta-Taveras also had tackles for loss in the game.

The Falcons played a bend-but-don’t-break style of defense, allowing some chunk plays here and there but coming up with stops when they needed them most.

Wilson moved the ball inside the Falcon 25-yard line five times in the game but only came away with points on one occasion.

On offense, Cruz caught two passes for 80 yards, while Moren pulled in three for 50 yards.

Salisbury (2-1) hosts Catasauqua next week. The Rough Riders (2-1) beat Mahanoy Area 28-0 in their opener and defeated Wilson 34-7 the next week before falling to Palisades 42-14 last week.

A year ago in a week 4 match up, a 2-1 Salisbury team knocked off a 3-0 Catty team in a game that let the rest of the Colonial League know this is not the same Falcon program that had struggled to win a game or two most seasons over the past decade.

This year’s Salisbury team will head into next week’s game looking to make another statement, especially after a slow start against Wilson.

“We definitely came into [the Wilson game] thinking it was not going to be a dogfight,” said Frye after Saturday’s win. “Then we got to the game and they started fighting back. We just had to work harder than we did in the beginning.

“In the second half we put more things together, but we still have some things to work on.”
