Police have arrested Leroy Mendez, 37, of Bethlehem, in connection with a hit-and-run crash that left a young woman with life-threatening injuries earlier this summer.
EMS responded to a reported pedestrian struck by a vehicle early in the morning July 19. Police determined the 24-year-old woman had been standing at a legally parked vehicle when she was struck, and she suffered multiple broken bones, a partial foot amputation, and a severe brain injury. As of Sept. 23 she remained in a coma at St. Luke’s Hospital.
She had been struck by a red 2016 Mazda CX-3 registered to Mendez, who struck two vehicles at the same time, as confirmed by physical evidence, surveillance footage and witnesses.
Mendez was located and failed a field sobriety test, and admitted he had been drinking during his birthday and confessed he was driving the vehicle and was involved in the accident.
Mendez is charged with aggravated assault, aggravated assault with DUI, accidents involving death or injury, insurance fraud and a number of driving infractions.
