PEER TUTOR: The Alvernia University Academic Success Center named Riley Furlong of Kempton, a 2025-2026 peer tutor. Peer tutors including Furlong offer a wide range of support including in-person and online as well as individual or group sessions, supplemental instruction for challenging courses, study groups, and extended test review sessions.
FLU SHOTS: Kutztown University will host a flu vaccine clinic 3-7 p.m. Oct. 1, McFarland Student Union parking lot. The clinic is sponsored by Lehigh Valley Health Network, proudly part of Jefferson Health.
No registration is required; vaccines are provided at no cost. Vaccines are available to anyone six months and up (while supplies last). A high-dose option will be available for those 65 and older.

BENEFIT WALK: The 2025 Lehigh Valley Walk for Apraxia will be held on Sept. 28 at Lone Lane Park to benefit children with apraxia of speech. The event begins at 9 a.m. with a ceremony starting at 11 a.m. Registration is free and open to all members of the community. Childhood apraxia of speech is a rare motor speech disorder that makes it difficult for an individual to speak. CHICKEN BARBECUE: Morgenland Church, 3120 Weidasville Road, Orefield, will be taking orders for Kauffman Chicken Barbecue dinners until Oct. 6. The dinners will include a half chicken, baked potato, applesauce and roll with the dinner for $15. Pickup will be from 4-6 p.m. Oct. 11. CROP WALK: The Greater Allentown CROP Hunger Walk is scheduled for Oct. 19. Event day registration begins 1 p.m. at St. Timothy Lutheran Church, 140 S. Ott St., Allentown. The walk begins 1:30 p.m. Walkers may choose either a 10K route or a “Golden Mile” route. Walkers who raise $150 or more by Oct. 19 earn a free T-shirt. T-shirts also will be available for purchase on the day of the event. The CROP Hunger Walk is an intergenerational fellowship and service event that benefits those who are struggling in the aftermath of floods, fires, droughts and other disasters throughout the United States and the world.

VOLUNTEER CONFERENCE: The Volunteer Center of the Lehigh Valley is hosting its second annual Nonprofit Impact Conference Nov. 6, 2025, at the Wind Creek Event Center. Following the success of the inaugural event, this year’s conference promises to be even more transformative, with a focus of “Strengthening Connections & Navigating Change.” The event will connect nonprofits together, help them gain actionable insights from expert- led breakout sessions, and discover innovative strategies to help amplify their mission.

AUTUMN HAWKWATCH: Counters and interpreters will tally migrant raptors daily 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. through Dec. 15.
YOGA ON THE MOUNTAIN: Hawk Mountain is partnering with local studio YOGA-B-YOGA to bring you yoga with an inspirational view that has to be seen to be believed 9-10 a.m. Sept. 28 at the Acopian Center. Additional dates are Oct. 26, Nov. 30 and Dec. 28. Come and clear your mind and open up your senses to nature with this wonderful packaged get away! All levels are welcome — no yoga experience necessary. Classes are limited to 15 participants. There is a registration fee.
WEE ONES WALK: Did you know that there is an entire ecosystem beneath our feet helping to create and keep the forest alive? Learn and get up close and personal with these beneficial bugs as Hawk Mountain staff explore the Native Habitat Garden, play games, create a cute craft, share stories, and perhaps even meet a live insect 10-11:30 a.m. Oct. 1 in the Visitor Center Gallery. Hawk Mountain Wee Ones Walk is designed for children 3-5 years old. This interactive program include story read-alongs, nature activities, animal meet and greets and a short outdoor walk. There is a registration fee.
MOON NIGHT HIKE: Enjoy a spooky Friday night atop Hawk Mountain with an educator to meet a live owl and set out on a hike in the dark of night 6:30-8:30 p.m. Oct. 3. Meet at the Visitor Center. Keep a keen ear out for the sounds of the wilds that come alive at night. Sturdy footwear required. Flashlights optional. There is a registration fee.
PENGUIN ADVENTURE: Join Shawn Carey, the past president and current vice president of Eastern Mass Hawk Watch, to learn about an unforgettable adventure to the remote Falkland Islands, home to spectacular wildlife including multiple species of penguins, black-browed albatross, and massive southern elephant seals 5:30-6:30 p.m. Oct. 4 at the Visitor Center. This program will guide you through the best wildlife hot spots, insider travel trips, and stunning photography opportunities to help you plan your own ultimate Falklands expedition. This event is free.

SENIORS GROUP: Lehigh Gap Nature Center, 8844 Paint Mill Road, Slatington, has announced a new group is forming for nature-minded seniors. BIRD WALK: LGNC Director Chad Schwartz will be hosting a guided autumn bird walk through the Lehigh Gap Refuge 10-11:30 a.m. Oct. 7. Binoculars will be provided to those who do not have them. Although these walks will be geared toward beginner birders, people of all ages are welcome to attend. The walk is free for members. There is a $5 per person fee for nonmembers.

TRAIL RUN: The 14th running of the Lehigh Gap Nature Center “More or Less 10K Trail Run and 2-Mile Scamper” will take place on Oct. 11. Two-mile scamper at 9 a.m. and 10K trail run at 9:30 a.m. This year’s course is a loop course that starts and finishes at the Nature Center in Slatington. HAZARDOUS WASTE: Lehigh County will be holding a household hazardous waste collection event Nov. 1 in the Coca-Cola stadium parking lot. This county-wide event is for residential use only, no commercial entities will be accepted.
