Recent community events put borough ‘on the map’

Northampton leaders note Konkrete Kids spirit, family fun draw crowds

At the Sept. 18 Northampton Borough Council meeting, council members and Mayor Anthony Pristash noted the borough had completed an active week of municipal success.

Pristash said a recent Northampton Area High School football game vs. Liberty High School was well attended and fun, despite the Konkrete Kids coming up short on the scoreboard. The next day was the borough’s 36th annual Uptown Northampton Street Fair, and the circus came to Northampton and performed during the entire weekend.

The NAHS Konkrete Kids football team has achieved much success in recent years, attracting a large following of fans full of community and school pride.

The Uptown Northampton Street Fair, hosted by the Northampton Area Chamber of Commerce, was a stunning success, with growth in attendance. The event boasted live entertainment and about 100 vendors on the borough’s historic Main Street, providing food and fun for the entire family. A number of food vendors sold out before the end of the event.

Pristash noted the fair is growing every year and plans are already underway on how to make the 2026 edition even better.

The circus that ran the same weekend was a glittering well-attended success. The Kingdom of Wonder medieval circus provided entertainment with a number of acts under a big top tent. It is expected the circus may return two years from now.

At the close of his remarks, Pristash said, “Northampton is really on the map,” noting many attendees at all three activities were from outside of borough.

Resolution 12-25 was approved to allow the administration to apply for a Local Share Account grant in the amount of $300,000 for the renovation of the Fourth Street Playground into a fully Americans with Disabilities Act-compliant playground. If successful in securing the funds, the grant has no public match.

Council approved permission to advertise ordinance 1241 that repeals and replaces 234-38 of the codified ordinances of Northampton Borough, providing for the regulation of handicapped-accessible parking spaces.

All resolutions and ordinances are available for resident review by contacting the borough office or visiting northamptonboro.com.

St. Paul’s United Church of Christ received approval to hold its annual trunk or treat 1-4 p.m. Oct. 26. The church’s request includes a temporary street closure of a portion of 19th Street from Ridge Alley to Lincoln Avenue.

Council approved the request from the Coplay Borough Police Department for assistance from the Northampton Borough Fire Police to help with directing traffic during the Coplay Recreation and Welfare’s Halloween Parade Oct. 21.

The Northampton Borough secretary requested an educational reimbursement for a certificate in human resources. The cost for the four courses and the exam is $6,612.25. Council tabled the request until next month’s council meeting to learn more about the education request.

In his public works and sewer committee report, council Vice President Ronald Glassic said UGI plans to start two projects in the borough in October.

The first project involves natural gas improvements to Newport Avenue, West 17th Street, Poplar Street, Cedar Street, West 18th Street and Railroad Street. A map showing the impacted streets will be posted on the borough website.

The second project is improvements to the natural gas system on Canal Street between West 21st and West 17th streets. According to Glassic, this project has an accelerated timeline due to the construction of the new bridge on Route 329. This project completion is estimated by the end of October. The road closures will coincide with the current closures for the bridge construction.

The next Northampton Borough Council meeting is set for 7 p.m. Oct. 2 in the borough municipal building, 1401 Laubach Ave. It is a hybrid meeting, with both in-person and virtual options. Visit northamptonboro.com to review the meeting’s agenda and to access the meeting virtually.
