Dina Hall continues “In-The-Round” series

There has always been a struggle by musicians to promote original music in the Lehigh Valley.
Singer-songwriter has been performing original music for years, and she is championing the cause with her quarterly “Songwriters In-The-Round,” which began in 2023.
In the concerts, three singer-songwriters present their music in an informal setting with interaction between them and with the audience.
“Songwriters In-The-Round” was held at 7 p.m. Sept. 18, Nazareth Center for the Arts, Nazareth.
During an interview in a coffee shop in Bethlehem, Hall says people like original work if they get the chance to experience it:
“They don’t know this stuff is happening, and would appreciate great lyrics and melodies if they heard them. The Lehigh Valley used to be a mecca for original music. We are shining a light on it, and people should come check it out.”
Performing in the Sept. 18 “Songwriters In-The-Round” were Sug Daniels, Antar Goodwin and Dina Hall.
Hall says that Daniels and Goodwin “are both based in Black music, but are two very different voices. Sug plays the ukulele and is based in folk and roots music. Antar is based in blues and Americana. He plays resonator guitar and has a deep, gritty voice. Both are the core of the touring group Roots Revival Road Show.”
It is very likely that two or three of them will play together at points, as has happened in the past in the series. Hall will ask questions of the other two performers in an interview format and will take questions from the audience.
“I take singer-songwriters from outside the area to introduce them here, and pair them with some from the Lehigh Valley. They can share what happens here with the scene in New Jersey or Philadelphia.”
Hall makes a point of presenting a variety of styles in the series. She says this approach will build a following of those who regularly attends the songwriters’ series. This should also make it particularly appealing to students.
“It is incredible for students. They can be high school, college, or adults taking a songwriting workshop.” She points out that the series is valuable to performers who play at the many open mikes in the area. “They can see people who have been doing it for a long time and are touring.”
Hall has been a musical influence in the Lehigh Valley for many years as a solo artist and with her Dina Hall Band. She describes her music as a blend of folk, rock, blues and alt-country. This year was her 17th year performing at Musikfest.
Hall will perform with her band at downtown Bethlehem’s Harvest Fest, Oct 11, and Oktoberfest at SteelStacks, Oct. 3 - 5. Last year, Hall released her second CD, “Firefly.”
Sug Daniels is a storyteller as well as a singer who combines elements of rock, folk and soul in her music. Her debut album, “I Believe in You,” is scheduled for release. The ukulele gives her music a cheerful style that is just a bit quirky.
Slide guitarist Antar Goodwin has toured internationally and collaborated with Sting, Lauryn Hill and Ruth Brown. As a solo performer, he tells many stories and uses a traditional blues style of music with a bit of country to play his own songs, which have a contemporary outlook.
