Special to The Press
Star of the Day Event Productions will stage the beloved musical “Oliver!,” Sept. 19 - 28, St, John’s United Church of Christ, Emmaus.
Based on Charles Dickens’ “Oliver Twist; or, The Parish Boy’s Progress” (1838), the Tony Award and Olivier Award-winning musical transports audiences back to Victorian England for the classic story of the boy who asked for more.
The story follows the young orphan Oliver (Henry Wills), as he escapes the workhouse and joins a group of petty thieves led by Fagin (John Corl) and the Artful Dodger (Liam Griffith).
“Oliver!” was the first musical adaptation of a famous Charles Dickens’ work to become a stage hit, premiering on Broadway in 1963, winning for Lionel Bart (book, music, lyrics) a best score Tony Award.
The show includes well-known songs like “Where is Love?” “Food, Glorious Food,” “Consider Yourself” and “As Long as He Needs Me.”
Star of the Day Artistic Director Kirsten Almeida, who also plays Nancy, says the musical explores themes of resilience, friendship and finding a family in the most unexpected places. And, she adds, “The cast’s energy and dedication is infectious.”
The cast includes Patrick Curley. Kaitlyn Glickman, Nathaniel Lawall, Jill Wills, Mickey Brown, Mike Daniels, Maggie Toner, Daniel VanArsdale, Rich Kliman, Ana Zetterberg, Safran Astra, Elise Curley, Vega Lucia Rivas-Alarcon, May Reeves and Gary Salijko.
“Oliver!,” 7:30 p.m. Sept. 19, 20, 26, 27; 3 p.m. Sept. 21, 28, Star of the Day Event Productions, St. John’s United Church of Christ, 139 N. Fourth St., Emmaus. 484-809-9228, http://www.staroftheday.org/
