Running a passion for Burgos

Catasauqua senior Janetliz Burgos decided to join the track team in ninth grade to stay active and provide a positive outlook. This season, she joined the cross country team after she ran the 800 meters in track the last three years.

There also was her health issue, one she was optimistic that would improve.

“Running has also helped me improve my health, especially with my mild cerebral palsy,” said Burgos. “Both cross country and track have really helped me work through many things in life.”

Head coach Kyle Rusnock has been impressed with his first-time runner.

“Janetliz is one of our seniors this year, and we are happy that she joined the team this year,” said Rusnock. “Janetliz is a hard-working athlete and gives us everything every day. She is improving every day and every week. She has also done a great job helping lead the team and being a role model for all.”

Burgos’ running interest has been influenced by former Roughie runner Olivia Bear, who is now running at Lafayette College.

“She has been a very big influence over me,” said Burgos of Bear, “She taught me the importance of perseverance, no matter how long or difficult the course might be.”

Putting the times and numbers aside, Burgos as cherished the moments, and she plans to have a fulfilling year.

“This year, I want to enjoy my final season with my team and continue making great memories together,” said Burgos. “Right now, I feel ready to push myself further, improve my speed, and achieve better times.”

Her first race will always stay with her.

“My most memorable race was my very first one,” added Burgos. “I was nervous at the starting line, unsure whether I could even finish. But once I started running, something clicked. I focused on each step and each breath, and when I crossed the finish line without giving up, I felt a huge sense of pride. That race showed me I was stronger than I thought.”

Burgos has enjoyed he times with her teammates.

“One of my favorite memories with the team is the fun we have on bus rides to our meets — we laugh, hype each other up, and share snacks and music,” beamed Burgos. “During practice, we always support one another, whether it’s encouraging someone through a tough workout or celebrating small improvements. What really stands out to me is how even athletes from other schools cheer you on during races, helping you push through when you’re exhausted. That kind of support and sportsmanship makes the whole experience unforgettable.”

Burgos also is a member of the Roughies’ wrestling team and is a cheerleader. Looking ahead, she plans to major engineering and minor in architecture in college. Until then, though, she plans to relish the moments and lessons that running has provided, and employ them in the future.

“Running has taught me discipline, resilience, and the power of community,” said Burgos. “I know those lessons will continue to shape me long after my final season ends.”
