Pates get by Hawks
Bethlehem Catholic and Freedom’s girls tennis teams continued their match from Sept. 4 that was halted by rain, and with a sweep in doubles matches, the Patriots topped the Golden Hawks, 4-2, on Sept. 15 at Freedom.
“Today, we had to rely on doubles for the most part,” said Freedom head coach Mark Sigmon. “I didn’t like the way singles was going on the first day, and it continued today. Aurora (Clark) wants to play against people who hit the ball as hard as she does, but when you play someone who’s lobby-lobby, you have to move up, and what happened was she was lunging after 90 percent of the balls.”
Elizabeth Schock defeated Clark at No. 1 singles, 6-2, 7-6(4).
“I think she had more power than last time,” said Schock of Clark. “It went back and forth today. She had me going to both corners a lot. Rallying a lot worked better.”
Becahi head coach Dan Arkans explained Schock’s game.
“I have to do very little coaching with Elizabeth. She just knows what to do,” he said. “She’s either going to drive her opponent crazy, or it’s going to be too powerful for her. She’ll go out there and hit 100 balls if she has to hit 100 balls. She’s gotten really good at drop shot lobbing. Elizabeth put up a good match because she was drop shot lobbing and moving the ball around. She’s a very smart player.”
Becahi also won its match at No. 2 singles where Louisa Robinson defeated Esha Kotadia, 4-6, 6-2, 6-2.
“Coming in here, I was like, I need to redeem myself,” Robinson said. “I tried to be more consistent with my hits and tried to hit better and more difficult shots. In the first set, she hit very short balls, so I had to run up and get it, and that got me out of breath, so now I knew her strategy and tried to play against it.”
Katie Ryer won at No. 3 singles for the Patriots over Sasha Mathew, 6-3, 6-2.
“Katie is 10-3 and is having a great year,” said Coach Sigmon.
One of the last matches to finish was at No. 2 doubles where Misha Braski and Paula Pagon staged two comebacks to top Caroline Dunn and Madison Araniego, 6-3, 7-6.
“The first time we played them, they weren’t having a great day, but this felt like one of their best days,” said Braski of the Hawks. “They were very consistent, and their serves were powerful.”
The Pates led 3-0 in the second set, but the Hawks forced a tiebreak.
“We kind of clocked out of the game,” said Pagon. “I’m not the best at my serves, so when it comes to serving under pressure, I need to have a clear mind, and I didn’t.”
Dunn and Araniego led 6-2 in the tiebreak, but Braski and Pagon came back to win, 8-6.
“They tightened up a lot at the end when [Freedom] was closing in,” said Coach Arkans. “Our returns weren’t great. Return serve was right to them at net, and they were able to put the ball away really easily. I thought, once the points got going, they were more likely to miss than we were, but this is a good team.”
Mia Napolitano and Katie Nenna were 6-1, 6-2 winners over Madelyn Araniego and Brooke Mayer, and
Gwen Adriguez and Alexa Holder defeated Kiley Parkes and Sophia Fiorini, 6-4, 6-1.
“We have three matches left and should beat Pleasant Valley, and Liberty and Stroudsburg are good. They’re right ahead of us in the rankings,” said Coach Sigmon whose Patriots are 9-4.
