Board provided center update

Brian Carl, township manager, provided updates from the township’s community center advisory committee’s latest meeting and on the construction of the community center at the Sept. 8 Weisenberg Board of Supervisors meeting.

“So we did have a meeting before this meeting,” Carl said. “I guess really the two biggest things that came out of today’s meeting is the tagline and that we do want to kind of promote the community center a little bit more.”

After further discussion with the board of supervisors on the tagline, Carl said, “We’re going to use ‘Where neighbors gather’ as the official tagline for the community center.”

He added the committee will also be having a logo competition and he is going to reach out to the schools and will send it out via Facebook to the residents.

“They (committee) actually came up with a little description there looking for a logo for the new community center,” Carl said.

He said the committee is trying to pull in some of the historical features of the township and natural features and is going to be looking at a deadline of receiving that by Oct. 31.

“And then finally we discussed kind of a fee schedule,” Carl added. “So, in front of you guys is what everyone seemed to agree with. I did some comparisons with other local community centers, what rental fees and stuff were.

“So, the overall proposed family membership rate would be $30 if you’re a resident of Weisenberg Township. If you are a resident of either Lowhill, Lynn or Heidelberg, it would be $50 for a membership rate, and we do believe we should have a senior rate,“ Carl said.

After further discussion on the fees, Carl and the board of supervisors agreed these fees are only suggested ballpark figures and what they’re planning at the moment.

“We (committee) did a budget of what we do think our anticipated expenses are going to be for the project,” Carl said. “Yearly operating costs are somewhat in the range of $52,000 a year, excluding the township office, and then I also did a breakout of what I think are realistic, actually ultra conservative income side of it, and I think we can make that $52,000 up pretty easily on rentals of various rooms, sponsorships like signs and stuff and memberships.”

Carl also explained they ran into a little change delay on starting construction of the community center.

“They were supposed to start on Thursday, but we ran into a fire rating issue with the fire wall, so the building got redesigned a little bit. Specifically, the corridor got added between the red part which is the tough part and the brown part which is like the main building portion,” he explained. “We had to slightly reduced the square footage of the main part by about 300 and something in square feet ... It did delay us in construction a little bit, working through the permitting right now. Hopefully, we’ll get rolling with construction next week sometime.”

During Carl’s township manager’s comments, the board approved a quote from Made in the Shade to aerate and overseed the soccer field playing area and baseball diamond and outfield for a cost of $3,420.
