LEHIGH VALLEY WEATHER

BC volleyball looks like contenders

Bethlehem Catholic kept its hot streak rolling last week to remain undefeated on the season.

The Hawks (8-0) won four matches last week, including two wins over Emmaus (7-1) and Freedom (7-1) who were both undefeated at the time.

Head coach Jessica Attieh was glad to see her group come out victorious playing two of the top teams in the EPC, but more importantly, was happy with how they responded in tough matchups.

“Last week we faced tough competition and our athletes responded with poise and confidence,” said Attieh. “What stood out most was how we stayed together in difficult situations. It showed the progress we’ve made since the start of the season and gave the team a lot of confidence moving forward.”

The Hawks are now one of two undefeated teams in the EPC, along with Central Catholic (6-0) who they take on this week.

The Vikings were a thorn in Beca’s side last year and will be a formidable opponent down the stretch for the Hawks, since they both are in 3A.

“I think we’ve earned the right to be in that conversation, but we’re also focused on continuing to grow,” said Attieh on whether she thinks her team is one of the best in the conference. “We respect every opponent we face, and our mindset is that we want to get better each week. If we keep playing with the energy, balance, and consistency we’ve been showing, then yes — we can compete with the best in the league.”

The Hawks also face Northampton (3-4) and Dieruff (2-7) this week.

Freedom lost to the Hawks in four games last week, but look towards a week with four games on the docket with Whitehall (4-5), Northwestern (6-1), Liberty (4-2) and Emmaus on tap.

It’ll be a key week for the Pates, who look to stay in the hunt for postseason positioning in the EPC race.

Liberty (4-2) has won three straight matches over Stroudsburg, Easton and Nazareth heading into a week where they play Dieruff, Freedom and Parkland (5-2).

With key bouts against their city rivals and the perennial contender in Parkland, it’s also a week for the ‘Canes to show where they stand in the region.
