CASD earns distinction from state association

Catasauqua Area School District Board of Education and administration members gathered at the Sept. 9 board meeting to celebrate the district’s recent Great PA Schools designation from the Pennsylvania School Boards Association. Erin Todd, from PSBA, attended to detail why the district received the recognition, and all attending the meeting received a cupcake in celebration.

“The Great PA Schools designation recognizes Pennsylvania public schools that provide students with access to rigorous programming, are community-centric, demonstrate financial well-being and display resilience,” according to its website.

Todd noted the academic curriculum allows for students to be successful and challenged, and the district’s focus on career readiness is a benefit to the students. Additionally, Todd lauded district initiatives such as its partnership with Kutztown University, as well as the accolades received by students and staff and the district’s leadership awards.

She noted CASD has a robust co-curricular and extracurricular program including a variety of sports, particularly the new girls wrestling team, the performing arts and more.

The Communities That Care coalition was noted among the district’s community partnerships. The CTC uses student-reported data to identify areas of concern and recommends evidence-based programs or initiatives for the district.

Additionally, the Catasauqua Community Cares Program within the district works to support economically disadvantaged students by supplying additional food resources as well as winter coats and more.

Todd lauded the district’s “comprehensive approach to supporting students” and the effort the district gives to “caring for students holistically.” She mentioned CASD’s efforts in emergency preparedness and drills as well as the focus on offering mental and behavioral health services.

CASD’s Great PA Schools ribbon term is from June 2025 to December 2028.

Superintendent of Schools Dr. Christina Lutz-Doemling shared her appreciation for the distinction.

“We are truly honored,” she said.

She noted the board and administration’s commitment to academic excellence, community partnerships and student well-being has helped the district become a special place, not only for the students, but staff as well. She said these qualities have allowed CASD to stand out among other local districts.

“Our schools are truly the heart of the community,” Lutz-Doemling said. “Strong communities build strong schools.”
