Curtain Rises: Reclaiming Shakespeare with “The Tempest”

Now in its second year, Reclaimed Performing Arts Company (RPAC) will present the third play in its “Extreme One Day Shakespeare Series” with “The Tempest,” 7 p.m. Sept. 14, Miller Symphony Hall, Allentown.

The theater group, founded by 2023 Cedar Crest College graduate Carter Reichard, has as its goal to create a judgment-free artistic space not limited by how artists are perceived.

Reichard says the company’s goal is to produce productions with the goal of showcasing those that are typically unseen and under-represented in the arts.

The group presented “Much Ado About Nothing,” in December 2023 and “Romeo and Juliet” in October 2024 as part of its “Extreme Shakespeare” series and staged a fully-produced production of “Hamlet” in March.

With its “Extreme Shakespeare” series, RPAC’s goal is to present staged productions of Shakespeare’s works with one day of preparation.

The cast and production team meet for the first time no more than 24 hours before the start of the performance to coordinate fight and intimacy choreography, blocking, and more. By the end of the day, the goal is to present a production the theater-goer will never forget.

One of Shakespeare’s later plays, “The Tempest” takes place mostly on a remote island, where Prospero, a magician, lives with his daughter Miranda (Olivia Theisen), and his two servants, Caliban (Jaeden Reppert), a savage monster figure, and Ariel (Emma Fliszar), an airy spirit.

The play includes music and songs intended to evoke the spirit of enchantment on the island.

The play explores many themes, including magic, betrayal, revenge, forgiveness and family. In Act IV, a wedding masque serves as a play-within-a-play, and contributes spectacle, allegory and elevated language.

Reichard says the name of the actor in the role of Prospero will not be revealed for privacy reasons.

The cast includes Emily M. Shaffer, Anthony Cornatzer, Michael Sanford Kay, Raven Whitefawn, Mia Zappacosta, Magnus Lawlor, Owen Dorlac, Cameron Kunsman, Caelie McRobert, Dan Black, Luke Swierzek, Destinee Gilbert, Alyssa Rismiller, Kelsey Snively and Colleen Popper.

Reichard directs “The Tempest” with Reese Blaszczyk as stage manager and Sam Philipps as dramaturg and intimacy coordinator.

RPAC will present its second fully-produced Shakespeare play, “Macbeth,” Feb. 6 and Feb. 7, 2026, Charles A. Brown Ice House, 56 River St., Bethlehem.
