Bargaining agreement between borough and Alburtis Police Officers’ Association approved

The Alburtis Borough Council met Aug. 27 with council members Ron DeIaco, Steven Hill, Hector Moss, Chad Atkins, Mehmet Birtek, Ashlynn Rivera and John Aleszczyk in attendance, along with Alburtis Mayor Kathleen Palmer, Alburtis Borough Manager Stephen Nemeth, the borough solicitor, and the borough engineer.

The meeting opened with the call to order, the Pledge to the Flag and a public comment period before moving to the approval of the Aug. 13 meeting minutes.

Council then heard a presentation from Zack Green of Raftelis and borough engineer Jeffrey Ott on Resolution 2025-8, which called for the adoption of updates to the Regional Act 537 Plan, a document that guides sewage facilities planning across the area. Per the resolution, ‘Chapter 71 of Title 25 of the Pennsylvania Code, requires the municipality to adopt an Official Sewage Facilities Plan providing for sewage services adequate to prevent contamination of waters and/or environmental health hazards with sewage wastes, and to revise said plan whenever it is necessary to meet the sewage disposal needs of the municipality.’

After the presentation and discussion portion, the council approved Resolution 2025-8.

Following the approval, Palmer delivered her report.

Council then reviewed and approved the bills for payment. The financial consultant’s report followed, outlining current budget performance and projections as the borough prepares for the close of the third quarter.

Several items of new business were addressed, starting with Ordinance 597, which approved and implemented a new collective bargaining agreement between the Borough of Alburtis and the Alburtis Police Officers’ Association. The agreement will cover the years 2025 through 2028 and was adopted after review by the council.

Ordinance 598, which revises the compensation of the borough’s administrative assistant, was also approved.

Council then held an initial review of Draft Ordinance 599, which included commentary from the Lower Macungie Fire Department, allowing further discussion before future readings.

The council recommended approval of Payment Application No. 1 to Allgyer Enterprises for ongoing contracted work and also voted to hire Kyle Hausman as a full-time maintenance employee to support the borough’s operations.

Another motion granted was an approval to purchase an Air Spade, a specialized tool used for safe digging and root protection in tree maintenance and utility projects.

Traffic safety was also on the agenda, with the council reviewing the addition of new street signs, including “Children at Play” and “Watch Your Speed,” to improve roadway awareness in residential neighborhoods. A decision will be made at a future meeting after official police review. Council acknowledged correspondence from the Lehigh Valley Planning Commission regarding Macungie Borough’s proposed zoning map amendment, noting its potential regional impact.

The meeting concluded with no additional business raised and the council adjourned after completing all agenda items.
