Zephyr Roundup Girls soccer off to nice start
The Whitehall girls soccer team knew they had the talent to make some noise in the EPC this season.
However, numbers were a concern before the season got underway.
But, so far this year, the team is off to a 3-2 start and that’s good enough to keep them in the top-half of the District 11 4A standings, keeping their goal of being competitive alive and well.
“The team is off to a solid start,” said head coach Chris Bleam.
The team dropped two, close games with Easton and Emmaus. Both teams are ahead of the Zephs in the standings with the Hornets sitting at 4-1 and the Rovers are 3-1.
But Bleam was pleased with the team’s effort in those tough games.
“The group defends well collectively having allowed only 3 goals in it’s first 5 games,” Bleam said. “Tough losses to Easton and Emmaus (both 1-0) were not due to lack of effort as the team competed with Zephyr pride and represented the school well.”
The girls are coming off a big win where they were able to find the back of the net five times in a 5-1 win over East Stroudsburg South. Even more impressive, the team was down early in the game.
Bleam is hoping the win could be a bit of a turning point.
“The team is hopeful the most recent 5-1 victory over East Stroudsburg South (down 0-1 in the 3rd minute) will be a springboard to more attacking success,” Bleam said. “A busy week is in front of the group as they face Pocono opponents: Stroudsburg, Pleasant Valley and East Stroudsburg North.”
