Hawks and Patriots square off this week
There are four undefeated teams in the East Penn Conference heading into this week’s slate of volleyball action and Bethlehem Catholic and Freedom are two of those leading the conference.
The Hawks (4-0) and Patriots (5-0) are both flying at the early part of the season and hope to keep things rolling as they head into the middle part of September.
Becahi might have the more impressive start with wins over Liberty and Parkland. Head coach Jessica Attieh has been getting contributions across the board with their strong start and will need it this week with a difficult schedule ahead.
“What stands out most is our energy and chemistry on the court,” said Attieh. “Our serve-receive has been really steady early on, which sets the tone for everything else and the girls have done a great job competing point for point in tight matches.”
“What’s been exciting is seeing contributions across the board—different players are stepping up in big moments. We’re focusing on limiting unforced errors, especially from the service line, and staying disciplined with our blocking and defensive positioning. Consistency in those areas will help us close out sets more efficiently. If we keep sharpening the details, we’ll keep building momentum as the season goes on.”
The Hawks have a big week ahead with matches against an undefeated Emmaus (5-0) team, Nazareth (4-1), Freedom and East Stroudsburg North. If there’s any week to see good this group can be, it’s this one.
Freedom has Northampton, Bethlehem Catholic and East Stroudsburg South on tap this week.
Head coach Lori Guman was optimistic about the team’s chances this year and they’ve proved her right.
“We have a lot of returners, even though some of them do not have a lot of experience at the varsity level,” said Guman. “They are a great group of girls and they play for each other. With the work ethic of this team I believe we will reach those goals.”
Liberty (2-2) were expected to go through growing pains this year and that showed in their two losses to Becahi and Central Catholic.
The ‘Canes have Easton and Nazareth this week, as they look to stay above the .500 mark.
