Classical View: Gabriel will be heard at Hawk Mountain

“Inspired by popular hits from the past to present, this concert offers something to please every ear,” says Sara Male, Executive Director of the Gabriel Chamber Ensemble (GCE).

“Featuring Bach, Mozart, Led Zeppelin and Earth, Wind and Fire, this program offers a little taste of what’s to come in GCE’s 2025-2026 season,” Male adds.

Gabriel Chamber Ensemble presents “Concert at Hawk Mountain,” 2 p.m. Sept. 7, Hawk Mountain Sanctuary, Kempton.

The annual concert at Hawk Mountain Sanctuary began in 2021 with support from former GCE president and Hawk Mountain members Mary Emma Dean and husband Bob Goulet.

With the construction of the amphitheater in the grove, Dean thought it would be a beautiful venue for GCE, “like a Tanglewood [music festival] experience in Schuylkill County,” says Male.

The concert will begin with three popular classical selections: Johann Sebastian Bach’s “Gavotte en Roundeau” from his “Partita No. 3 in E major” for solo violin, Johann Pachelbel’s popular “Canon in D Major” and “Assez vif Très rythmé,” the second movement of Maurice Ravel’s “String Quartet in F major.”

Next will be several contemporary works: “Going to California“ by Led Zeppelin, “September” by Earth, Wind and Fire and “Cantina Band” from “Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope” (1977) by John Williams.

The concert is to conclude with the “String Quartet No. 17 in B flat Major,” K. 458 by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Completed in 1784, the work is nicknamed “The Hunt” owing to the hunting horn-like theme of the opening movement.

Musicians performing in the concert are violinists Dana Allaband and Simon Maurer, violist Agnes Maurer and cellist Ai-Lin Hsieh.

Says Male, “Attending this concert is a wonderful way to not only enjoy a fun and varied program in a beautiful setting, but also to get to know what the Gabriel Chamber Ensemble is all about.

“This is an important part of our community outreach and a wonderful continuing partnership with Hawk Mountain,” Male says.
