WHS girls soccer team blanks Pates

Whitehall midfielder Collene Sommers’ shot on goal sailed straightaway into Freedom’s net to give the Zephyrs’ a 1-0 lead that would become the final score against the Patriots on Aug. 28 at Whitehall.

“I got it from Olivia Tabarani. She played an amazing through ball to me,” Sommers said. “I kind of took it one way, drew the defender to the one way and then I cut it back on my right foot had a long shot. The goalie was out of the net and I hit it right over her hands.”

Whitehall took two shots in the last two minutes of the first half, saved by Freedom goalie Brooklyn Pronovich.

“I think we started out very aggressively, and then in the second half we let it go a little bit,” said Sommers. “They were definitely pushing us from behind and the players started to talk back a little bit but they were definitely initiating the fouls. They challenged us physically. They just kept coming.”

A shot by Freedom in the 72nd minute for the tie was the Patriots’ best opportunity in the final minutes, but the ball took a bad bounce.

“I was very stressed in the moments because everybody was coming together and pushing until the last second, so I knew I had to save it,” said Whitehall goalie Cora Mussleman. “[Our defenders] are all very good at communicating, we’re all very close, and we know how to raise each other and rise up in the moments and make sure that we are strong. A good win, definitely.”
