Tookany Creek Bluegrass Band performs in Emmaus Community Park Aug. 17
The Emmaus Summer Entertainment series continued Aug. 17 with the Tookany Creek Bluegrass Band entertaining the crowd with a variety of hits from bluegrass, country, folk and swing music.
The band members have been making music together for more than 30 years.
Even though the air was humid, cool breezes moved through the pavilion and the rain did not appear until the concert’s end. The crowd had their chairs on the lawn while most stayed under the pavilion listening to tunes such as “Send Me Your Address In Heaven” and “Are You Missing Me?”
The band is known for its vocal harmonies. John Catterall has been playing stringed instruments since 1967. He plays the mandolin and is a lead vocalist.
Also a vocalist, Beth Mead performed with her banjo. Mead is a teacher of banjo and bluegrass music and also instructs guitar and ukulele. Mead led the vocals on “I Want To Dance With You.”
Paul Kenney plays guitar for the band and provided vocals on “Love the Mountains.” Even the train’s sounds rolling past through the performance blended in with the song as if the train was a member of the group.
Finally, George Steck could be seen playing the large upright bass on the stage. The size of the instrument drew the attention of the eye and Steck played it with ease.
All members harmonized on a variety of selections and enjoyed the cheers from the audience.
The SwingTime Dolls closed the series Aug. 31.
The concerts are free to the public and donations are accepted.
The concerts take place in the Performing Arts Pavilion at Emmaus Community Park, Shimerville Road.
