Statement win for BC vs. EHS
Beca football is back.
At least that’s what it looks like after two weeks in the season.
The Hawks dominated Emmaus last week 35-14 in one of their most impressive performances in recent memory.
Quarterback Cayden Vassa ran for 271 yards and four touchdowns, as the Hawks ground game continued to annihilate opponents with over 400 yards on the ground.
With two lopsided wins to start the season, the Joe Bernard era at Bethlehem Catholic is off to a scorching start.
“This was a big win for our guys because this was a true test,” said Bernard. “We’re in big boy league the rest of the way and to win like this against a team that was ranked sixth in the state before the season says a lot about this football team.”
Becahi (2-0) led 21-7 at halftime, but Vassa the highlight of the game came midway through the second quarter when Vassa scored on an electric 87-yard run for a 14-0 lead.
Emmaus responded on the ensuing possession with a 49-yard rushing score by Jerek Cooper, but the Hawks showed they can strike quick just before halftime, as Vassa hit his brother Carter for a 26-yard touchdown.
Cayden would go on to break touchdown runs of 55 and 66-yards in the second half, as Emmaus couldn’t adjust to slow him down.
“You saw tonight we have a lot of weapons, we just need to get these guys touches,” said Bernard. “We talked to the kids about how they were up against Emmaus last year at halftime and then lost in the second half.
“Well, you saw here we came out and scored after two plays and this is just a totally different team.”
The Hawks look night and day compared to a year ago and Bernard knew there was talent when he took this position in the spring, but last Friday’s win was certainly a statement victory to what this group is capable of growing into the rest of the year.
“When I got here and saw how much talent we had it was just a matter of getting these kids in the right places and getting things done,” said Bernard. “I guess we have a different feel than last year. The kids were talking about what happened last year at halftime and they weren’t going to let that happen again.”
