Mayor’s Message: September promises outdoor events aplenty

With the sunlit days getting shorter, schools reopening and Eagles fans talking about “repeating,” I reluctantly have to wish the summer of 2025 a fond “farewell.” Yes, we had some pretty good memories and great times, but now, it’s time to watch our scenic parks, hills and mountains turn from lush greens to the most amazing array of natural colors throughout fall’s impending arrival. It’s nature’s gift to us — let’s appreciate it as we should.

Even though we move away from summer’s hot days, there are still plenty of activities this September to keep you out and about in Northampton. First and foremost, it’s time for the 36th annual Uptown Northampton Street Fair Sept. 13, held 11 a.m.-4 p.m. Hosted by our Greater Northampton Area Chamber of Commerce, this year’s fair will showcase an even wider array of vendors, if that’s even possible. Join me as uptown Main Street will be transformed into a vibrant hub of activity. With the wide variety of tasty treats our food vendors bring to the crafters and merchandise vendors on hand to help with your early Christmas shopping, topped off by free tours of the Roxy Theatre, this fair continues to feature something for everyone. There’ll also be a nice selection of adult beverages available to enjoy responsibly, so don’t forget your ID.

As this is certainly a family-friendly event, you’ll see fun demonstrations, rock-climbing activities and plenty of enjoyable live musical performances through the day. Also in attendance are our Northampton police and fire departments for an up-close and personal look at how they provide the great services they do to our community, assisted by our outstanding public works department in setting up the street. So, please make your plans to step out for a most enjoyable day on Main Street, supporting your local businesses, organizations and the Chamber. You and your family will be glad you did!

With the immense amount of planning and organization such an event requires, I want to personally recognize and thank those at the forefront, ensuring this fair “brings it” year after year. First and foremost, our Greater Lehigh Valley Chamber of Commerce executive VP and an honorary Northamptonian, Jessica O’Donnell-Gower. For the countless hours of her time and talent directed to “build a better Northampton,” starting with this fair, Jess has worked alongside me for the past 12 years, from when I was Chamber president, councilman and now mayor. Her focus, professionalism and innovative ideas are unparalleled — just what a project like this fair requires. Alongside Jess is the energetic and ever-smiling Caitlin Hamlin. Managing her first fair, she’s well-overachieved, putting together an impressive lineup of attendees that would be the envy of any community’s fair. Caitlin, I’m so glad you’ve joined us! Last but not least is our GNACC president, the ever-pleasant “Mr. Nice Guy,” Dave Kerper. With his leadership and board support, Dave has made it his mission to keep this fair growing in vendor participation, entertainment and crowd approval. My hat’s off to these three and everyone who joins me to make fair a true community event!

Now, even though the movies in the park summertime edition is in the books, the autumn edition is ready to continue this nice addition to any Friday. On Sept. 5, “Paddington in Peru” will be featured. On Sept. 26, grab your chairs and blankets for a showing of “Elemental.” The shows begin 8:30 p.m., with family-friendly entertainment beginning 7:30 p.m., yet another wonderful reason to get out of the house and enjoy our parks.

And when was the last time you heard, “The circus is in town?” Well, the Kingdom of Wonder Circus will be visiting our Municipal Park Sept. 12-14! As promoted, “You are invited to the Queens Court for dazzling acrobatics, mesmerizing juggling and laugh-out-loud comedy” as you step into the Kingdom of Wonder, a Renaissance-themed circus adventure filled with enchanting performances, breathtaking artistry and magical experiences for all ages.

“Prepare to be dazzled by daring acrobats, hilarious clowns and unbelievable feats that’ll make your jaw drop and your heart soar. It’s a whimsical world where dreams come to life — and you’re invited!” another review reads.

To say this circus sounds exciting would be an understatement from the reviews I’ve googled, and I know this will undoubtedly be a memorable trip to the circus.

I look forward to seeing you there!
