What children and parents need to know

School bus safety tips for all from PennDOT:

• Children should always be walked to the school bus stop.

• Get to the bus stop five minutes early so students do not have to run across the road to catch the bus.

• Children should be supervised at the bus stop.

• When waiting for the bus, stay away from traffic. Line up at least five steps away from the curb or the roadway.

• Students should walk at least 10 feet in front of the bus when crossing so the bus driver can see them.

• Never cross the street behind the bus.

• Students should wait until the bus has stopped all traffic before stepping out into the road.

• When the bus is moving, students should always remain in their seats. They should never put their head, arms or hands out of the window.

• Amber lights flashing on a school bus mean caution. When driving, watch for children on both sides of the road. Slow down and be prepared to stop.

• Never run after the bus if it has already left the bus stop.

• Talk quietly; do not distract your bus driver.

• Never speak to strangers at the bus stop and never get into the vehicle with a stranger.
