Vera Cruz Homecoming celebrates 73 years

The Vera Cruz Community Association hosted its 73rd annual homecoming at Mystic Chain Park, Main Road East, noon to 8 p.m. Aug. 17.

There was a steady flow of visitors throughout the heat of the afternoon and more started to come in for the evening program.

The homecoming is considered a “meet and greet” among neighbors and old friends. It is a wonderful opportunity to get to know the people in the community.

Volunteers were visible to assist with parking as well as the games and food.

Kim Stauffer and her children, Ryan, Katie, and James, volunteered throughout the day greeting all visitors as they entered the park. Each visitor received a homecoming program that included all the information for the Vera Cruz Community Association and pictures from the previous year’s event as well as advertisements and contact information from the numerous supporters of the event.

Vera Cruz Community Association President Betsey Schmeltzle provided beverages with Jeff Broskey. Broskey’s wife, Darlene, was grilling hot dogs with Jody Hasik. Larry and Angela Stahler had the tough job of grilling the corn in the heat. The aromas of hot dogs and corn on the cob grilling are a true sign of summer.

Visitors enjoyed the outdoor seating or brought their own chairs to listen to The Rehrig Brothers who entertained crowds noon to 3 p.m. “Toast of the Town” DJ/MC Cesar Rosado was a familiar voice providing entertainment 3-5 p.m. The band TimeWhys took the stage 5 p.m. and closed out the event.

A cake walk was held in which winners could choose from a table of treats or door prizes that included coffee makers and bean bag chairs.

Volunteer Art Mohr sold T-shirts for the event. There were other vendors as well selling food and merchandise.

Representatives for Milo Mackenzie, R-131st, provided a table to share services available through the politician’s office for interested residents.

Citizens Fire Company (Vera Cruz) was present for any emergencies.

Over the years, the number of volunteers putting together this event has decreased and the community association is seeking additional volunteers and their input in updating the event for the future. The group meets the second Thursday of each month 6:30 p.m. Individuals interested in getting involved are welcome to attend.
