The Galena Brass shine on July 27
A humid Sunday evening did not deter the audience from supporting the Emmaus Community Park summer concert series recently.
The Galena Band, also known as the Little Lehigh Band, performed for the crowd who enjoyed the eclectic mix of songs from a wide range of eras.
From the Big Band era, the band performed Glen Miller’s “Tuxedo Junction.” The crowd also enjoyed polkas. For the full story, visit lvpnews.com.

Richard Groller. The 1980s hit “99 Luftballons” by Nena was also performed.
Volunteer Louise Dillensnyder, of Emmaus, was invited to perform with the band on stage. She was given maracas to play during “Under the Sea” from “The Little Mermaid.”
The audience participated in Elvis Presley’s “All Shook Up.”
What began as just a group of friends sharing music and laughter, Galena Brass was organized by Tom Weidner in 1995. The band has been going strong for 30 years.
Each member brings a unique musical education background to the stage.
Weidner earned music degrees from Bucks County Community College and West Chester University and plays trombone for the group.
Trumpet player Chris Gerhart graduated with music degrees from Temple University and a master’s degree from Boston University. He is a middle school music director in Bristol Township and frequently plays with the Philly German Brass.
Kutztown University alum Matt Nieznay also plays trumpet. He is a manager at Zeswitz Music in Reading.
The final trumpeter is Penn State music alum Susan Halteman. Halteman earned a master’s degree in music from Texas Tech University and currently performs with the Quakertown Band.
Mark Benson holds a music degree from Central Michigan University and master’s and doctoral degrees in music theory and composition from Michigan State University. A professor at Bucks County Community College, Benson is also founder and proprietor for MB pianos. He plays tuba for Galena Brass.
Retired Allentown School District teacher Richard Groller plays percussion. Groller earned his bachelor’s degree from Philadelphia Music Academy and has played with the Allentown Symphony Band for 50 years.
The strong educational backgrounds of these talented individuals was heard in the eclectic selections of numerous eras of music. Most of the band members do individual freelance work, teach and perform with other groups as well. Their experiences were appreciated by the audience. The band will perform at upcoming Oktoberfest events and will close out its season at Longwood Gardens in Kennett Square in December.
The Galena Brass performance is part of the Emmaus Community Park Summer Concert Series. The series ends Aug. 31. Admission is free and donations are accepted.
