Schmidt’s hit leads Emmaus CM to season finale victory
The Emmaus Senior Connie Mack baseball team ended the regular season in the Lehigh Valley League on a high note, winning the season finale to halt a four-game losing streak. The Hornets lost their first three games last week before winning the last one.
Emmaus began the week by falling 14-0 in five innings at FBTAA on Wednesday, July 9. The Hornets then dropped another 14-0 contest against East Stroudsburg the next night. On Friday evening, Emmaus came up just short at home against Catasauqua, losing 3-2, but closed out the week with a 3-1 victory at North Parkland on Saturday.
In the game with FBTAA, Emmaus was outhit 10-1 and gave up two runs in the bottom of the first inning, three in the third and then recorded a nine-run fourth inning. Sam Fleetwood had with the lone hit for the Hornets.
Against East Stroudsburg, Emmaus ended with two hits, one each from Liam Iannetta and Braiden Marshall. East Stroudsburg got a run in the first inning, then brought in four runs in the third, one in the fourth and eight in the fifth inning.
The Hornets fell behind Catasauqua 1-0 in the first before tying the game in the second inning as Ryley George scored on a passed ball.
Catty answered with back-to-back innings scoring a run in the third and fourth. Emmaus pulled to within one on an RBI single by Owen Herrity, who led the lineup with two hits.
In the victory over the Buffaloes, North Parkland took a 1-0 lead after one, but the Hornets answered with a three-run top of the fourth inning, highlighted by a three-run single from Davey Schmidt. Fleetwood and Henry Pina Thevenint both finished with two hits, while Marshall, George, Schmidt and Jack Smith each had a hit.
Jesus Diaz started on the mound and threw 5.2 innings of two hit ball, giving up zero earned runs and striking out eight to earn the win.
Emmaus finished the regular season 5-12 overall and was 17th out of 23 teams.
