Penn State Extension to host forum on PFAS contamination Aug. 28

Experts to discuss PFAS contamination concerns Aug. 28

PFAS — short for perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances — are man-made chemicals used for decades in industrial and household products. They do not easily break down, can dissolve in water, and have been detected in soil, surface water and groundwater worldwide.

Pennsylvania residents in and near Columbia County will have an opportunity to learn and ask questions on PFAS, what it means for their health and environment and what can be done to manage or reduce impacts.

Penn State Extension will host the PFAS Forum 6:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. Aug. 28 at Central Columbia Middle School, 4777 Old Berwick Road, Bloomsburg.

The free program will connect community members with Penn State researchers and extension educators for an in-depth look at the issue.

The forum will address how PFAS move through the environment, potential human exposure pathways, testing and monitoring resources, interpreting test results, management options and ongoing scientific and regulatory efforts, according to organizers.

The program is geared toward residents with private water systems, farmers, landowners and others concerned about water quality and environmental impacts.

Presenters will include Penn State researchers, specialists and educators in water resources, community and economic development, agriculture, public health, law and environmental science.

The event is free, but organizers encourage registering before the event.

More information and registration is available on the Penn State Extension website at https://extension.psu.edu/pfas-forum.
