Magota’s 4 hits lead NP to pair of wins
The North Parkland Buffaloes came into the American Legion Region 2 playoffs with a full head of steam.
They charged through their first two games to join rival South Parkland to be the last two undefeated teams in the double elimination tournament played at Boyertown High School’s Bear Stadium.
Tsubasa Magota was the spark for the Buffaloes offense in the two openers as he went a combined 4-for-8 with four runs scored, five runs driven in and two stolen bases helping to lead Parkland to a 5-1 win over NorCo League champion Wanderers and a 10-3 win over Doylestown.
“I just look to help the team with my defense and speed,” said Magota, who is entering his senior year at Parkland. “I have pretty good speed, so I try to get on base and help the team.”
Against Wanderers, Magota reached on a two-base fielding error in the bottom of the first with the Buffaloes trailing 1-0. From there, he stole third and scored on a wild pitch to tie the ball game.
In the second, North Parkland took advantage of a pair of errors to open the inning and Andrew Beers hit into a fielder’s choice to bring in a run for a 2-1 lead. After a wild pitch allowed another run to score, Magota struck again when he singled to right to score Beers and give the Buffaloes a 4-1 lead.
Just to be sure they had enough breathing room, Aiden Henning singled to lead off the bottom of the fourth and one out later stole second. That brought the pesky Magota to the plate and he lined a 2-2 pitch to right field to bring in Henning and make it a 5-1 lead.
On the mound, Noah Trager started and gave up just one hit and two walks while striking out three in 5 1/3 innings. Leo Dauberman came on in relief and was perfect over the final 1 2/3 innings for the Buffs.
In downing Doylestown, an RBI double by Nate Under and an RBI single by Peyton Scherff put Parkland up 2-1 in the top of the fourth inning.
An inning later, it was again Magota doing damage when he stepped to the plate with two runners on and two out and doubled to left to bring in both runners to make it 4-1.
An RBI single from Nate Unger made it 5-1.
The extra runs came in handy when Doylestown got to Unger for two runs in the bottom of the fifth and closed the gap to 5-3.
North Parkland put the game away with five runs in the top of the sixth when Henning delivered an RBI on a fielder’s choice and the Buffaloes looked to pull off a safety squeeze with Magota, who beat the throw to first to not only plate a run but keep the bases loaded with a 7-3 advantage.
A bases-loaded walk to Unger and a fielding error by Doylestown brought in two more runs for the 10-3 margin.
Unger worked through five innings and Dauberman came on to get the final six outs in the game.
“We tried to keep our pitchers fresh, and we relied on our depth,” said coach Jay Marakovits. “We have a number of guys who can pitch so we weren’t necessarily looking for guys to throw seven innings, especially in this heat. If they did, it was a bonus, but we have good depth on our staff.”
