Freedom, Liberty get tennis victories

In the first week of high school girls tennis, Freedom and Liberty won their opening matches, and Bethlehem Catholic lost in a heartbreaker in its third match of the new fall season.

Becahi dropped its first two matches to powerhouses Nazareth and Emmaus before losing to Easton, 3-4, on Aug. 22.

The match came down to No. 1 doubles, won by Easton’s Eleanor Hornbake and Ella Sales, 8-7 (7-5) over Elizabeth Schock and Louisa Robinson.

Earlier in the match, Schock defeated Dhvni Patel at No. 1 singles, 6-1, 6-1, but Robinson lost to Hornbake at No. 2 singles, 2-6, 1-6, and Sales had won at No. 3 singles over Madison Araniego, 6-0, 6-1.

In doubles matches, Becahi won two out of three with Sasha Mathew and Caroline Dunn defeating Tiya Patel and Nimrit Caur at No. 2, 6-4, 7-6 (3), and Brooke Mayer and Ruby Robinson defeating Bhvi Goradia and Aliya Winkel at No.3, 6-3, 6-2.

At No. 4 doubles, Sophia Fiorini and Kiley Parkes lost to Theodora Devlin and Addison Walker, 2-6, 3-6.

The Liberty Hurricanes were 4-3 winners over Stroudsburg on Aug. 18.

Liberty lost at No. 1 and No. 2 singles as Vasoula Skarlis defeated Corrine Mumma, 6-2, 6-3, and Ava Marsh defeated Sarah Wang, 6-3, 7-6 (4), but the Hurricanes won at No. 3 singles as Polina Dorman defeated Julia Sobrinski, 3-6, 6-4, 6-3.

Liberty swept all doubles matches with Abby Mayes and Ellie Episcoplo defeating Marlo El-Bassiouni and Charlotte Kish, 6-3, 6-1, Paulina Vereschaga and Taisa Sawicki defeating Brielle Burns and Izabella Gembicki, 6-3, 6-0, and Iris Cantelmi and Naomi Domina defeating Aryanna Vidaic and Maddie Reeder, 7-6 (3), 6-1.

Stroudsburg won the match at No. 1 doubles where Sophie Slatky and Grace Gao defeated Anna Li and Adison Paindexter, 8-6.

Also on Aug. 18, the Freedom Patriots were 6-1 winners over East Stroudsburg North.

Aurora Clark won at No. 1 singles against Madison Quarterman, 6-0, 6-2, and Katie Ryer won at No. 3 singles against Clarys Sanchez, 6-0, 6-0, but Esha Kotadia fell to Brisset Bates at No. 2 singles, 2-6, 2-6.

The Patriots swept all doubles matches where Misha Braski and Paola Pagan defeated Ewelina Pelekhach and Trisha Polster, 6-0, 6-0, Mia Napolitano and Katie Nenna topped Kaylin Acheampong and Brooke Doering, 6-0, 6-0, and Gwen Adriguez and Josephine Davies defeated Jayna Ladouceur and Gabrielle Mella, 6-0, 6-0.
