Free-throw contest held

As part of the Catasauqua municipal outdoor basketball court dedication festivities, a free-throw contest was planned for community members Aug. 23. The court was dedicated Aug. 22 as the Walt Winch Court, in honor of a member of the Catasauqua High School Class of 1970 whose family donated the funds to redo the community court.

The contest was open to community members young and old. By 9:30 a.m. that morning, there was a turnout of boys and girls in pre-K through high school ready to enter the competition.

Five Catasauqua High School students were present, not only to enter the contest, but also to help the competition run smoothly. Current Rough Riders Joseph Conway, Jonell and Jomar Rosado, Frankie Pujols and Aalani Nix were happy to play and help out.

Some of the youngest could not reach the basket rim, so they were allowed to take their shots from a closer spot. They tried and had fun. Other older shooters made as many as seven foul shots out of the 10 they were allowed to shoot.

Some of the youngsters needed to use a technique called a “hopper shot” used by NBA star Wilt Chamberlain decades ago when he would shoot foul shots.

Borough office workers were happy to present this contest to the community and hope to see it return as an annual event.
