Field hockey blanks PHS

It didn’t take long for Madi Williamson to make her presence felt on the 2025 field hockey season. The talented Northampton sophomore tallied 4 goals and an assist to lead the Konkrete Kids to a season-opening 5-0 win over Palmerton on Saturday.

Williamson spoke about elevating her game from last season, “I feel like I’m a lot more confident, like taking bigger shots from the top of the circle and stuff because I know I can count on my team to get a tip. Last year, I feel like I was very hesitant.”

Head coach Carrie Saul elaborated, “For a sophomore, she’s not sophomore level. She distributes the ball very well. She works very hard year-round. She’s got skills that some college kids still can’t do.”

The game itself started a little slowly. The Kids drew a pair of corners and had a handful of shots on goals, but there was no score after one period.

Williamson notched two goals in the second period. Ali Tretiak assisted on the first 1:16 into the quarter. Freshman Hayden Lopata scored her first varsity point by assisting on the second with a little under two minutes to go in the half.

It took less than a minute of the third quarter for Williamson to complete the natural hat trick with a beautiful little reverse chip into the Palmerton cage. Captain Grace Roberts picked up the first point of her senior season by assisting on Williamson’s final goal five minutes later.

Last year’s leading scorer, Lauren Reznik, got her first tally of this season by tipping in a ball off of a Williamson shot with four and half minutes left in the contest to complete the scoring.

The K-Kids’ defense kept the pressure off goalie Kaya Pietryka, who posted the clean sheet. A notable standout on the backend was freshman Livia Churetta. “Watch for her. Hopefully, I have her for four years. She knows how to distribute the ball. She’s a student of the game. She’s fast and has a good stick to back it up,” explained Saul.

The road gets considerably more challenging this week as the K-Kids three of the four EPC and district semifinalists from 2024 within a 7-day span. First up is Nazareth at home on Wednesday. Then Northampton goes to Emmaus to face the Hornets, who have won 36 district championships in a row. Finally, longtime nemesis Easton comes to town on Tuesday.
