Falcons close successful summer at Throwdown

Just a few weeks after a number of area basketball teams competed in the first major tournament of the summer, the Cedar Beach Bash at the Beach, they hit the outdoor courts for the second tournament, the Allentown Throwdown at Cedar Beach park in Allentown. It was played outdoors primarily, while the first tournament was all indoors at Whitehall High School or Elementary School.

The A-town Throwdown ran from Thursday to Sunday with teams playing in pool games to qualify for a postseason type tournament. Games on Thursday and Saturday were able to be played at Cedar Beach, but Friday and Sunday were moved indoors to Executive Education Charter’s gymnasium due to rain.

The Salisbury High School boys basketball team has had a summer to remember with a ton of success. Two weekends ago, the Falcons won the small school division championship at the Bash at the Beach. Then, while balancing competition at the Throwdown, Salisbury took down fellow Colonial League foe Southern Lehigh for the third time in two weeks in the Lehigh Valley summer league small school playoff championship on Friday evening.

“Overall, it’s been a really fun summer for the guys,” said head coach Jason Weaver. “I’m so proud of the way that they’ve been playing and they’ve all worked hard to be the best basketball players they can be. This summer has been a testament to their hard work.”

At the Throwdown, the Falcons played two pool games, going 1-1 overall. They won their first game on opening night Thursday, downing Fleetwood 51-29. But on Friday in game two, Salisbury lost to Overbook 42-24 to end their run.

“This weekend, although it felt a little shorter only playing in two games, it was still good for the guys to play two teams we don’t normally play,” Weaver said. “They also like playing on outdoor courts, so it was fun for them.”
