Four Moore options presented

Four options for Moore Elementary School were presented at the Northampton Area School District Board of Education facilities committee meeting held Aug. 18 in the library conference room at Northampton Area High School.

NASD Director of Operations and Maintenance Jonathan Jenny, who chaired the meeting and presented detailed line-item charts of the options, emphasized costs for each option are estimates.

Moore Elementary School closes at the end of the 2025-26 school year.

The options, which include one-time and annual costs, are to keep Moore open as is for $465,000; close Moore but maintain it for $40,000; demolish Moore and keep property for $1.9 million; and retain Moore for community use for $642,000.

“We would like to know by Thanksgiving or Christmas,” Jenny said of the facilities committee recommendation and school board decision concerning Moore.

“For the 26-27 budget is when it’s going to be included,” said NASD Business Administrator Craig Neiman of the Moore options costs at the Aug. 18 facilities meeting.

Neiman said $2 million was set aside for Moore. It was earmarked for renovations. Exterior lighting, security and surveillance of Moore is a consideration.

Agenda items reviewed by Jenny during the one-hour facilities meeting included the following.

• NAHS auditorium stage: $48,000, stage curtains, via COSTARS Commonwealth of Pennsylvania cooperative purchasing program, from Pittsburgh Stage Inc., Sewickley, Allegheny County

It’s less than the anticipated $300,000 cost.

The installation of the curtains, which are the same style and color, might occur this fall.

A new sound system and new lighting are under consideration.

“With more weight on the roof (for a lighting grid), we have to have an engineering study,” Jenny said.

New carpet, which costs $12,000, was installed at the end of June in the NAHS auditorium.

• George Wolf Elementary School, $5.7 million, HVAC

Classrooms were cleaned the weekend of Aug. 15.

The first day of classes in NASD is Aug. 25.

• NAHS boiler replacements: $90,000, three new, highly efficient, gas-fired boilers replace dual-use (oil, gas) boilers installed

• George Wolf front driveway: $99,000 for 300 feet

• Stadium and gym sound systems

“That has been completed,” Jenny said.

• Stadium turf replacement: $779,750, via COSTARS

The estimate was $1 million. Included would be 15-foot safety fencing for lacrosse games.

• NAHS roof replacement: $2.4 million

Also attending the facilities committee meeting were NASD school board President Kristin Soldridge; school Director Brian McCulloch, a facilities committee member; school Director Parker Flamisch, a facilities committee member; and Arif Fazil, senior business development leader, CHA Consulting Inc., consulting engineering firm for NASD.

The board of education next meets 6:30 p.m. Sept. 8 in the auditorium at NAHS, 1619 Laubach Ave.
