Four police presentations made

There were four presentations at the Aug. 7 Upper Macungie Township Board of Supervisors meeting.

First, Timothy Kline was pinned as a new police officer; he is a graduate of Emmaus High School and certified in 2022. He joins the department after serving with Macungie Police.

Sgt. David Malischewski was promoted for his career in traffic safety and community engagement.

Officer Nicklaus Morris moved from the traffic unit to community services, focusing on schools, events and relationship building.

Sgt. Dan Fagan was recognized for 24 years of service, leadership and mentorship and wished well in retirement.

The township board approved contracts with GKO Architects for the design of new police and fire stations, following nearly a year of feasibility studies on future facility needs for police, fire, administration and public works.

GKO was selected over another firm based on staff confidence in their ability to deliver quality, timely designs, despite not being the lowest bidder.

The board authorized $945,000 for police station design and $819,500 for fire station design.

Township Manager Robert Ibach said accurate cost estimates require completing the architectural work before final project approval in early 2026.

The board also hired Alvin H. Butz, Inc. as construction manager for both projects at $3.6 million, noting the firm’s role in keeping past projects on schedule and within budget.

The construction manager will be involved early in the design process to help control costs and reduce change orders.

Near the end of the meeting Township Solicitor Andrew Schantz explained, “As you can tell, by this evening, the bond successfully closed on July 24. So, the money is available.”

Board Chair Jeff Fleischaker said regarding the police and fire departments ... we’re watching the life cycle of a police officer, it’s really appropriate that we have these motions tonight and we’re moving forward for those officers. We thank you for everything that you’re doing and that your staff is doing and make sure that it’s reflected to everyone, once we’re not here, that we appreciate both departments and what they’re doing for us every day.”
