Hopkins looks for continued success

With his continuing success in wrestling, Whitehall’s James Hopkins is hoping for a similar run on the football field this fall,

The 5-10, 190-pound senior will be returning to the Zephyrs’ lineup as a tight end/defensive end this fall after he became a starter last season.

On the mats last year, Hopkins went 26-9 and recorded a sixth-place finish at districts. During his sophomore season, Hopkins posted a 34-10 slate, a sixth-place finish at districts and a fourth-place medal at regionals. He was 25-12 and also was sixth at districts as a freshman.

Hopkins is confident his wrestling background can enhance his football season.

“I have worked on speed and explosiveness to help prepare for this season,” boasted Hopkins. “Wrestling has helped with leverage and using my hands.”

Hopkins began playing football at the age of seven, and it all began innocently by watching the game. He has appreciated his support along the way.

“I started playing football because I watched the NFL,” he recalled. “I thought I would give I a try. From there, coaches really began to influence me.

“Most of my coaches have all pushed me and gave me the support that I needed.

Still, the move to football wasn’t an overnight success. He quickly developed a love for his new sport.

“It took me a little bit to adjust,” recalled Hopkins. “I was new, but the background of wrestling helped me. I was mostly doing it for fun until I found a passion for it.”

Head coach Andy Marino has liked what he has seen from Hopkins for the 2025 season. The Zephyrs went 5-7 and lost to East Stroudsburg South, 22-17, in the District 11 Class 5 A championship game.

They will open the season against Wilkes-Barre Area Aug. 22.

“Coming off a strong wrestling season, James has been working hard in the offseason to be a productive two-way player,” said Marino. “He as an excellent work ethic, and he brings great effort to the program.

“He is the ultimate team guy.”

James Hopkins is ready to make the transition from wrestling to football this fall.
