Fall sports are finally back in full swing this week, but football is entering their second week of camp after going through the heat acclimatization period from Aug. 4-8.

With things ramping up this week, the first round of scrimmages come to the forefront this Saturday, followed by the earliest Week 1 ever in Pennsylvania on August 22.

Freedom’s Jason Roeder and Liberty’s Shawn Daignault return to lead both programs, but Bethlehem Catholic features new head coach Joe Bernard following the departure of Tyler Ward after two seasons.

Bernard might be new this year, but has been around the block plenty, as he was the head coach at Nazareth from 1990-95 and at Stroudsburg from 2011-12.

Bernard, a Moravian University graduate, spent the last 11 seasons as special teams coordinator at the University of Albany.

However, he started his coaching career back in the early 1980s, coaching with Becahi legends Chuck Sonon and Bob Stem.

The Golden Hawks will be at Parkland this Saturday for a tri-scrimmage with the hosts, along with Souderton at 10 a.m.

Liberty hits the road for an 11 a.m. start at Delaware Valley and Freedom will keep BASD barren this weekend of football with a 10 a.m. showdown at Central Bucks East.

Liberty plays twice on Thursday night this year, while Freedom and Bethlehem Catholic play each other on their only scheduled Thursday game of the season.
