Ohlson’s wins Catty Men’s Summer League

Summer basketball in Catasauqua closed its final chapter, and a familiar team walked away with the league championship.

Ohlson’s Landscaping won its third consecutive title with a convincing, 79-55 victory over Reichenbach Oil in the championship game of the Catasauqua Summer Men’s Basketball League.

At the time of this writing, North Catasauqua had not completed its postseason yet.

Ohlson’s, led by Parkland High School boys’ coach Eddie Ohlson, routed Lehigh Valley Jays, 69-45 in the semifinals, and Reichenbach Oil downed Grover Street Pub, 77-65.

Along with Eddie Ohlson, the team was led by former Allentown Central Catholic standout Gabe Lewullis, Parkland grads Sam Iorio, and Austin Biedelman, and Notre Dame grad Brendan Boyle.

Reichenbach Oil was paced by former Salisbury standout Dan Reichenbach, Allen Central Catholic grad Chad Kratzer, and former Moravian University player Porter Kelly.

Catty Corner, a former champion and a perennial favorite, was knocked out by Reichenbach Oil in the opening round.

They featured former Northampton grades Aidan Elwood and Phil Hall as well as Catty alums Andrew Brinkley, Andrew Armellino, James Snyder, Alex Parker, and also former Emmaus grad Zack Sabol.

League director and head boys’ basketball coach Eric Snyder stated that the annual “Battle of the Boroughs” – pitting the regular - season and playoff champions from the Catty and North Catty leagues – would not be held this summer due to the excessive amount of rainouts.

Snyder added that the tournament also was shelved due to some teams being champions in both leagues.

The veteran coach has begun his search for a new format and has explored the possibilities of having the winners and second-place teams from the Lehigh Valley Summer Basketball League in the big- and small-school divisions, as well as both divisions in this weekend’s A-Town Throwdown meet in a tournament.

Snyder had hoped he could develop the tournament this summer, but he likely sees it as a future project. The Battle of the Boroughs began in 2021 after the Tournament of Champions ended its 30-year run due to a lack of teams.

The Catasauqua and North Catasauqua leagues continue to be the lone adult summer basketball outlets in the greater Lehigh Valley.

“We were happy that we had 10 teams in the league,” said Snyder. “We knew we needed a different format for the Battle of the Boroughs.

“It would be great if we could have a new format this year. We’ll definitely look into something for next year.”
