Northampton County Emergency Management Services would like residents to share some safety tips pertaining to extreme heat with the days of high temperatures in the summer.

Extreme heat is a period of high heat and humidity with temperatures above 90 degrees Fahrenheit for at least two to three days. In extreme heat, your body works extra hard to maintain a normal temperature, which can lead to death. Extreme heat is responsible for the highest number of annual deaths among all weather-related hazards.

Prepare for those extremely hot days by having your air conditioners inspected, repaired or serviced. If outside in the heat, stay safe by wearing appropriate clothing; drinking lots of fluids with as little sugar and caffeinated products as possible; and taking breaks often.

Do not forget to keep pets hydrated as well, and try to keep pets off asphalt or dark pavement surfaces while outside. These surfaces can burn the animal’s feet/pads.

If you or someone you know shows signs of heat-related illness such as high body temperatures, rapid/strong pulse, red skin with no sweat or dizziness/confusion, call 911 and/or seek medical attention immediately, as these could be signs of heat stroke.
