“Hamlet”: The tragic story of the Bard’s tortured poet Prince.
How could you make this tale accessible to children and families?
The PA Shakespeare Festival’s “Shakespeare for Kids,” through Aug. 2, Main Stage, Labuda Center for the Performing Arts, makes it work.
The adaptatioin is written by Erin Sheffield and directed by Matt Pfeiffer. The music is composed by Andrew Kane.
With four actors and a little help from props and puppets to fill out the cast of characters, the show comes to rousing life.
Relena Kiser and Bella Lucano play well together as a comic and straight lady. Tyler Borneo is great fun as a guitar-playing robot. Teddy Novak rounds out the cast, portraying Hamlet with just the right amount of drama.
A smattering of popular music and a good helping of audience interaction makes the story a little less tragic and a lot more fun.
From the “Shakespeare for Kids” theme song, to the audience dancing, to a Hamlet-inspired Hokey Pokey, there is plenty of action to engage children from toddlers to preteens.
