Shapiro says many in Pa. will lose benefits

Gov. Josh Shapiro’s office recently released new data estimating how many Pennsylvanians will lose Medicaid and SNAP benefits as a result of the Trump administration’s Big Beautiful Bill that just became law.

While addressing a broad array of subjects, the bill eliminated taxes on tips and overtime pay, (though both are actually deductions claimed at tax time and expire in 2028) while also granting a 14 percent tax break for the wealthy (which do not expire). To pay for this, the bill will add about $3 trillion to the national debt over the next 10 years and cost as many as 12 million people access to Medicaid.

The tax benefits are immediate, but the Medicaid cuts will be delayed until at least late 2026, after the midterm elections.

Shapiro says this will have a devastating impact in Pennsylvania, where an estimated 144,000 Pennsylvanians who receive SNAP could lose their access to critical food assistance, while 310,000 Pennsylvanians could lose Medicaid coverage.

The governor’s office released a breakdown of how many Pennsylvanians could lose Medicaid and SNAP benefits by congressional district. Here in the 7th Congressional District, under Rep.
