“We are very excited to present this brilliant music from opera and Broadway featuring two remarkable artists: soprano Grace Lerew and tenor Daniel Rodriguez,” says Ronald Demkee, Allentown Band Conductor.
“‘Opera and Broadway Favorites’ is a program that affords listeners the luxury of hearing many of their favorite arias or Broadway hits all within the space of ninety minutes,” Demkee says.
There are two opportunities to enjoy “Opera and Broadway Favorites”: 7 p.m. Aug. 12, Waldheim Park, Salisbury Township, and 7 p.m. Aug. 14, Christ Lutheran Church, Allentown.
The band opens the program with Richard Wagner’s stirring “Prelude to Act III” from “Lohengrin” (1848), followed by Georges Bizet’s exuberant “Toreador’s Song” from “Carmen” (1875).
Grace Lerew performs one of Renee Flemming’s trademark arias, the beautifully haunting “Song to the Moon” from Antonin Dvorak’s “Rusalka” (1900).
The band next performs “Musetta’s Waltz” from Giacomo Puccini’s “La Boehm” (1895).
Daniel Rodriguez offers Puccini’s “E lucevan le stelle” from “Tosca” (1899) and Giuseppe Verdi’s popular “La donna e mobile” from “Rigoletto” (1851).
The concert’s first-half concludes with “Three Dances” from “The Bartered Bride” (1866) by Bedrich Smetana.
Rodriguez opens the second half of the program with two blockbuster songs from Broadway: “Into the Fire” from “The Scarlet Pimpernel” (1997) and “Anthem” from “Chess” (1988).
Members of the band’s brass section are featured in a transcription of Donizetti’s well-known “Sextet” from “Lucia di Lammermoor” (1835) with Gregory Seifert and DeVaughn Roberts on trumpets; Caitlin Heckman, Jeff Krause and Jon Conrad, on trombones, and Clearnce Weber on Euphonium.
Lerew returns with “A Little Bit in Love” from Leonard Bernstein’s “Wonderful Town” (1953).
Rodriguez concludes the program with what many consider the definitive tenor aria, Puccini’s “Nessun Dorma” from “Turandot” (1924).
The Aug. 14 concert at Christ Lutheran Church includes the Lehigh Valley men’s chorus Summer Harmony under the direction of Andrew Lutz-Long. Summer Harmony joins the Allentown Band in “Toreador’s Song” in addition to presenting a hymn-sing and a Broadway medley.
Daniel Rodriguez, the Brooklyn born, now-retired police officer, helped uplift the United States’ spirits with his stirring rendition of “God Bless America” after the 2001 World Trade Center terrorist attack.
Daniel’s philanthropic and patriotic efforts have been recognized with numerous honors, such as the USO Lifetime Achievement Award and the DAR Medal of Patriotism and others. Now known as “America’s Beloved Tenor,” he continues to uplift and inspire in performances.
Allentown native Grace Lerew has performed works in collaboration with Renée Fleming and recently won the Metropolitan Opera Laffont Competition whose mission is to discover promising young opera singers and assist the development of their future careers.
Lerew has performed in Mozart’s “Idomeneo,” “The Rake’s Progress,” “Little Women” and “Le Nozze de Figaro,” and internationally in “Cendrillon” (Tel Aviv, Israel) and “Die Zauberflöte” (Berlin, Germany).
Summer Harmony men’s chorus, established in 1991, brings together men from diverse backgrounds to enjoy singing and performing a variety of music. The chorus is known for its high-quality musicianship and its ability to blend a diverse repertoire with a strong sense of camaraderie.
