Horwath, LM hand Trojans first setback
It truly was an up-and-down week for Lower Macungie’s Lehigh Valley Legion baseball team.
The team split a pair of games but was unable to cash in on the momentum of the first win, which featured an upset of the top team in the league.
The Mustangs met up with previously undefeated South Parkland and left the field the victors in a 5-2 win over the Trojans.
A pair of pitchers gave Lower Macungie 3 1/3 innings of shutout relief to give the Lower Macungie offense the opportunity to put together a pair of two-run innings.
Nicolas Balsamo and Connor Horwath teamed up to keep South Parkland hitless and allow just four baserunners. Balsamo came on in relief of starter Ryan Hummell, who went 3 2/3 innings, allowing two earned runs. Balsamo struck out two in his relief stint and Horwath fanned one for Lower Macungie.
South Parkland (9-1) led 2-1 going to the bottom of the fourth inning. With a runner on first and two outs in the fourth, Horwath tripled to tie the game and then scored the go-ahead run on a single by Ryan Bennett to give Lower Mac (4-5) a 3-2 edge.
Just to be sure they had enough of a lead, Horwath let his bat do the talking again in the bottom of the sixth when he doubled to drive home Chase Simmons to make it 4-2. The Mustangs loaded the bases and Aaron Fleetwood walked to bring in Horwath for the three-run advantage going to the final inning.
Horwath opened the frame by issuing a walk before erasing the runner with a double play ball. After a second walk in the inning, a ground ball to second ended the game.
Horwath finished the game with a pair of extra-base hits, a pair of runs scored, and a pair of RBI at the plate. Bennett also collected two hits in the game.
On Monday, Lower Macungie was battling with Whitehall-Coplay (6-4) but trailed 3-2 through four innings.
The Mustangs went down quietly in the top of the fifth and then saw the game fall apart for them in the bottom of the inning when a pair of errors opened the door to a nine-run inning for Whitehall.
In all, Whitehall collected a pair of singles, a triple, three walks, a hit batter and took advantage of a total of three Lower Macungie errors to score the nine runs. Lower Mac made four errors in the game that resulted in nine unearned runs.
Hummell collected a pair of singles in the game for Lower Macungie.
The loss to Whitehall-Coplay kicked off a week of five games in five days for the Mustangs. Still to come are games on the road at Northern Valley (5-3), a home game against North Parkland (6-3) on Wednesday and a pair of games against the Trojans on Thursday and Friday with the first game being played at Parkland High School and the second game at Church Lane.
