LEHIGH VALLEY WEATHER

Falcons win tourney title

It was a perfect weekend for the Salisbury High School boys basketball team, at least in the win-loss column.

It may not have always been easy or pretty, but the Falcons won each time they stepped on the court and came away as champions of the Small School Division at the Cedar Beach Bash Showcase last weekend.

Salisbury played and won all four games on its way to the title.

The Falcons first three games included very little drama, as the average margin of victory was 18 points, two double-digit victories and an eight-point win. But, just as it normally is in any sport, the championship game came down to the wire, even extra time.

The Falcons opened the tournament Thursday night with a 51-30 win over Panther Valley, behind 14 points from Steven Lozada.

On Saturday afternoon, Salisbury defeated Kutztown 62-37 with Bryan Gonzalez tallying 12 points. Sunday morning, in the winner’s bracket final, the Falcons took down Colonial League foe, Southern Lehigh 45-37, as both Lozada and Garrett Leiner finished with 16 points.

A couple hours later, the two teams met once again in the championship game, as the Spartans had to stave off elimination with a 53-26 win against Notre Dame Green Pond. This one was much closer than the first meeting and went into overtime.

Lozada missed on a drive to the basket that could have given his team a win in regulation over Southern Lehigh. Lozada then missed on another attempt at a game-winner with his team trailing 58-57 in the final seconds of overtime. But he grabbed the rebound of his missed layup and got the putback at the buzzer as the Falcons pulled out a 59-58 win in the a small-school final.

“We played Southern Lehigh in the summer league about a month ago and we were missing some guys and I think they beat us by 30,” said Falcon head coach Jason Weaver. “But we beat them twice in this tournament and I think I was most impressed with our overall defense. We were down by 10 twice in this game and we kept chipping away on offense and got some stops on defense. Southern Lehigh shoots the ball well. They lost a few guys from last year, but all of their shooters are back. They’re going to be tough.”

Drew Petrie led the way for Salisbury with a game-high 23 points in the title game. Weaver was pleased with the effort of his group this weekend and throughout the entire summer so far, as the Falcons are 9-2 overall in summer league play.

“The guys have really bought in and played well together this summer,” Weaver said. “It’s a group that really loves playing and focuses their efforts on playing basketball. We don’t have many baseball or football guys this year, so this group wants to better themselves on the court solely, and it’s showing.”
