ALVERNIA UNIVERSITY: A total of 297 Alvernia University winter and spring student athletes were named to the MAC Academic Honor Roll as announced by the Middle Atlantic Conference, including two local residents. Grant Fitzgerald of Kutztown was named to the MAC Academic Honor Roll while studying sport management as a member of the Alvernia University baseball team. Julian Schaffhouser of New Tripoli was named to the MAC Academic Honor Roll while studying biology as a member of the Alvernia University esports team.

LEHIGH GAP: Young explorers of all ages are invited to discover the cool critters of Lehigh Gap Nature Center during the Junior Explorer Nature Walks beginning 10-11:30 a.m. July 17. Each family-fun nature walk will meet at LGNC’s Osprey House. Kids will learn to use insect nets to catch and identify insects. Be sure to wear closed-toe shoes (no sandals), sunscreen, and a hat. All children must be accompanied and supervised by an adult. Walks will be canceled if heavy rain or thunderstorms are forecasted. To register, go to lgnc.org. GOTR EVENTS: Girls on the Run Lehigh Valley and Pocono will be hosting a Cheers to Strong Girls Bingo Night 5:30-8 p.m. Oct. 16 at Stone Farm Cellars and Vineyard, 5831 Vera Cruz Road, Center Valley. Participants must be 21 and older.

Spots still remain open at Camp Girls on the Run to be held 8 a.m. to noon Aug. 11-15 at the Waverly Community House site. Camp GOTR provides an opportunity for rising third through fifth grade girls of all abilities to build friendships through fun games, enjoy physical activities, and express creativity through arts, crafts and storytelling. The theme of this week at Camp GOTR is “Girls have Heart.” Throughout the week, girls will explore the power they have to recognize and respond to their own emotions and emotions in others. All lessons and activities are taught by trained GOTR volunteers. Camp cost includes five daily Camp GOTR curriculum lessons (20 plus hours) of instruction, her own girl journal, Camp GOTR T-shirt, bracelet, cinch sack, water bottle, completion certificate and a healthy snack each day. WOMEN’S 5K CLASSIC: The 33rd Women’s 5K Classic Race, Walk will take place on Oct. 4 at Little Lehigh Parkway, Allentown. Program start is 9:15 a.m. The Run, Walk and Pink Ribbon Loop start time is 10 a.m. The first 1.3 miles will be on the road with very few turns. After your initial climb, your hard work will pay off and the balance of the run will be gently rolling hills and flat to the finish. The entire course will be on paved or hard packed surfaces. If you plan on running some, but not all of the race, register for the 5K run instead of the Competitive Walk. Packet pickup is Oct. 3 or Oct. 4. Online registration ends midnight on Oct. 2. Last day to change events is Sept. 15, (but you may do it at the expo). T-shirt guaranteed if registered by Sept. 15. Expo registration fee is $50. PASSPORT EVENT: The Passport to 4-H event will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. July 22 at 4184 Dorney Park Road, Lehigh County Agricultural Center, Allentown. Event is open to youth ages 5-7 and is limited to the first 12 registrants. No cost for 4-H members. Contact Ellyn Siftar at 610-391-9840.

AAHA DAY: Country Doctor Veterinarian Hospital 20th anniversary; 3-5 p.m., July 25 at 6807 Weiss Road, New Tripoli; free Nesting Box ice cream, petting zoo, games and basket raffles.

HAWK MOUNTAIN: APPALACHIAN POLLINATORS: 9 a.m. — 3 p.m. July 26. This full-day course will explore pollinating insects and their relationships with native plants in the meadows surrounding the Acopian Center for Conservation Learning, with a focus on identification of native bee species.

F0REST FUN: 10 a.m. — 2 p.m. July 26. Learn about Appalachian flora, fauna, and more at a variety of fun and informative stations in and around the Visitor Center. Engage in an interactive musical program by local musician, Dave Kline, and get to meet some of our avian ambassadors.

NATURE CAMPS: There’s still time to register your young explorer for Hawk Mountain’s Summer Nature Camps! Designed for kids entering grades one through six. Our weeklong, themed day camps are packed with outdoor fun — from stream surveys and live animal programs to hands-on experiments, hikes, and crafts. Spots are still open for the following camps!

PHEAA WEBINAR: The Pennsylvania Higher Education Assistance Agency (PHEAA) is hosting a webinar to guide college students and their families in filing the PA State Grant Form (SGF).

To determine eligibility for a PA State Grant, applicants must complete the 2025-26 FAFSA, which can be accessed online at pheaa.org/FAFSA or studentaid.gov. First-time applicants must complete the SGF. Most renewal students shouldn’t have to complete the SGF, but some may. PHEAA will let you know if you are required to complete the SGF or an additional form.

The presentation will be made Wednesday, Aug, 6 from 6 to 7 p.m. PHEAA’s Higher Education Access Partners will present an overview of the 2025-26 PA State Grant process and provide step-by-step guidance to participants as they complete and file the PA State Grant Form.
