The event traditionally includes exhibits by club members, vendor tables featuring such specialty items as miniature foods and decor and a children’s project to encourage future miniaturists. By his calculation, Slimmon has volunteered for the club for 40 years, starting when his wife was a member.
“Down on the farm,” the theme of this year’s project for kids, encourages kids to craft a scene of their own with the kit including miniature animals, a bale of hay, a bucket of apples, a picket fence, parts for a scarecrow, three pumpkins, miniature leaves and more, according to club member Leslie Spratt, who designed the project. Building the project takes about an hour, Spratt said.
Wally Kowalak brought his custom miniature mansions to the Lehigh Valley Small on Scale Miniatures Show and Sale July 13, his first show in 20 years, according to his son, Tony. Kowalak, 92, started building miniature homes by constructing a house for his daughter. In 1993, retailer Sears featured his work in a promotional magazine on display at the show in Breinigsville. Club member Jennifer Hershberger’s “Old Oak House” is featured in an exhibit of club members’ work featured at the show. “I love building from scratch,” Hershberger said, who has been making things “since I was little.” The kitchen in the tree house includes a dry sink made of cardboard with a pump constructed of bottle caps, Hershberger said.
