Connie Mack team in playoffs

In his first season at the helm of the Northampton Connie Mack team, Mike Biechy raised the bar high for the season.

And his team responded.

“Not to sound arrogant, but we have a very talented team,” stated Biechy. “I expected to do very well.”

The Konkrete Kids finished the regular season with an overall 14-3 record and tied for third place. They opened the postseason at Hellertown Wednesday night. They had a seven-game winning streak before it was recently snapped.

Biechy certainly has been pleased and not surprised with their overall effort.

“We lost our season finale to Southern Lehigh,” said Biechy. “We were missing a couple of our guys who were helping Legion out in the playoffs, but no excuses, they were the better team that night.

“We finished the season 14-3, tied for third place. Five teams finishing with three or less losses in the league is pretty impressive. We had a great regular season and I’m super proud of the team.”

Biechy noted the team will lean on second-year players Tyler Biechy (.333, 2-1, 3.00), Quinn Hughes (.393, 14 RBIs, 2-0, 1.98), Zack Hartzell (.417, 20 hits), and Logan Merkle (.281) for their experience in the postseason.

Nate Kovach is hitting .356 with 20 RBIs, and he has a 1-1 record with a 1.58 ERA with 24 strikeouts in 17 innings. Aidan Sergent has a 2-0 mark with a 1.21 ERA.

With their season success, Northampton also qualified for the state tournament.

Aside from the statistics, the Kids received a distinctive honor. They were awarded the league’s Team Sportsmanship Award at the league All-Star team.

“I’m super proud of that,” beamed Biechy. “It’s important to me that we conduct ourselves and play the game the right way.”

The Kids will be looking to keep their momentum going. They earlier dropped an 8-6 decision to Hellertown May 30, the second game of the season.

“We’ll be ready,” said Biechy. “We’re looking to avenge an early-season loss to them.”
