Catasauqua police warn of mail theft

In a Facebook post, Catasauqua Police Department warned residents about a theft from the U.S. Postal Service blue mailbox at Second and Bridge streets. An “unknown amount of mail was stolen” in the morning of July 9, the post read.

The department is advising anyone who deposited mail in the box July 8 to cancel payment on any checks immediately and to “assume your mail will not reach its intended recipient,” according to the department’s Facebook post.

This is the second time this has happened in the borough this year. The police department also issued a warning on Facebook May 15 about a theft from the USPS mailbox in the 500 block of Second Street, which occurred May 10-11.

Anyone who was determined to have fallen victim to the theft and/or subsequent check fraud is asked to contact the police department.

On social media, residents are expressing their frustration, asking the borough to get rid of the box since this continues to happen or to install cameras to either deter thefts or to help catch perpetrators.

Unfortunately for residents, there aren’t many mail options in the borough. The post office at 205 Bridge St. has been closed since a ceiling collapse in June 2024. Residents were advised to use the post offices in neighboring municipalities, such as Whitehall Township, Coplay Borough and Hanover Township, Lehigh County.

According to a May 30 update on the Catasauqua Borough website, U.S. Congressman Ryan Mackenzie, R-7th, reported the post office is expected to reopen in September.
