Borough mayor offers fireworks reminder

At the July 8 meeting of Coplay Borough Council, Mayor Joseph Bundra took time to remind residents of the fireworks regulations put in place by both the state and the borough.

As the Independence Day holiday had come and gone, Bundra said the pyrotechnics should be over as well.

In 2017, Pennsylvania restricted fireworks displays, mandating they could not be set off within 150 feet of an occupied structure or vehicle. There are many rules in the state law, including the time fireworks are allowed, but the challenge for law enforcement is that officers must actually witness the incident.

At present, there are three full-time officers and one part-time officer employed by the borough, including the police chief.

The department is seeking additional full-time officers; in fact, details of the staff search have been posted on Facebook.

Also on the agenda was a vote to not accept an officer as a permanent full-time member, per Civil Service rules, and approve “compensatory time payout ... at 226 hours, totaling the amount of $6,767.82” for that officer. No other information was given.

In other business at the meeting, council approved the lease of the borough’s Parkway Pavilion to the Coplay Community Days committee for Aug. 16-27. The festival is set for Aug. 22-24.

Council also approved a $500 contribution from the borough to this annual community event.

Lehigh County Juvenile Probation was granted approval to use the borough gym for training 8 a.m.-4 p.m. Aug. 11.

Council also approved all reports from the borough police and fire departments, health and building inspectors and the treasurer. All bills submitted for review were approved for payment as well.

Coplay Borough Council will next meet Aug. 5, for a workshop, and Aug. 12, for a regular meeting. Both are held 7 p.m. at the municipal building, 98 S. Fourth St.
